Manchester United a great English club but aren't one of Europe's greats. Even Ferguson admits it.

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken in the build up to the game about his frustration and impatience at United’s lack of European trophies and the envious glances he cast in the direction of the likes of Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

"My expectation has always been high in regard to the European scene. You do get envious of other clubs' records in Europe and we're trying to get to parity with those clubs: Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Liverpool...

"We need to progress quickly to get to that level "

If you listen to their supporters its that massive club Southampton.....

If its based on the sizes of their respective trophy cabinets and on success in european competitions then it can only be Liverpool and Man Utd.

zummerset I think that the definition given by the OP is incorrect in some respects - 'greatness' is a subjective description. You kind of know it when you see it - it is all about the history, the fans, the ground, great players etc.

For example Aston Villa aren't great and probably neither is Chelski

That riled me too actually. To talk with such authority on an issue which is always going to be subjective, I'll be kind and assume the OP was on a wind up rather than anything else.

Hob Nob must really piss you off then?

Henry Winter wrote a piece a while back on what he called 'iconic' European clubs. Utd and Liverpool were the two English clubs included. Definitely subjective with a tad of authority though, so perhaps you best not read it.
