Play off finals!

by TBM » 28 May 2011 14:53

Today
Stevenage v Torquay
Tomorrow
Huddersfield v Peterborough
Monday
Reading v Swansea

Apparently lots of fans are stuck on the M6 for the game today (Stevenage v Torquay) - only 12,000 expected in total, OT only about 10% full

My money is on Stevenage

I'm expecting Stevenage and/or Torquay to be down to 9 men by half time.

Got the feeling this is going to be fast and furious.

Why didn't they just have this game at say Loftus Road? The atomosphere will be dire at OT with so many empty seats.

If there wasn't the Champions League final at Wembley this year - the game would have been played there, can you imagine just 12,000 inside there

League Two play-off final attendance - 11,484

That's rubbish.

Think you will have seen a lot more travel if it had been at Wembley.

How did Reading have any difficulty against those two teams this year? Abysmal football.

Stevenage deserved it as Torquay just didn't have the cutting edge required. Good luck to S'age in League 1 next year - they'll need it.

You should know that in a one-off match anything can happen.

Didn't Stevenage beat Newcastle this year?
Very useful at home.

Very true..more from Hertfordshire for example would have made the trip (Stevenage took well over 15k to 2 of their FA trophy finals)

2 promotions in 2 seasons for Stevenage.

Whatever people think of their style it works for them.

Maybe they'll get a few mroe through the gate playing more bigger sides (like us the town is populated with Arsenal/Spurs fans etc ofcourse)

07: Bristol Rovers v Shrewsbury - 61,589
08: Stockport v Rochdale - 35,715
09: Gillingham v Shrewsbury - 53,706
10: Rotherham v Dag & Red - 32,054

11: Stevenage v Torquay - 11,484

All those towns/cities will be full of people who support big teams, and all matches have at least 1 team who have a pretty long trip to Wembley/Old Trafford. Why such a low attendance today?

Wembley no doubt and even some of those clubs get double what Stevenage/Torquay get for home games.

Its not as if Old Trafford is a poor place to watch a game of football though. And a 50,000 difference between 2007 and this year? That can't be all down to B Rovers and Shrewsbury having a bigger average attendance than Torquay and Stevenage.

Bristol Rovers took around 40,000 for that game.

Old Trafford isn't a bad ground, but it doesn't have the same special "day out" appeal that a trip to Wembley, or even the Millennium Stadium has.

Went to the game at OT today. Bit strange standing in the Stretford End supporting a team in yellow. Gulls fans outnumbered Stevenage by about 2:1

Stevenage were solid, scored a very good goal but were nothing special really. Torquay were disappointing, created several good openings but let down by their finishing every time. I wouldn't mind us keeping a close eye on Eunan O'Kane though...

Why such a low attendance today?
small teams, long journey and possibly (I don't know how much they charged) high ticket prices.

Last weekends Blue Sqare play off final at Wastelands (MCFC) were £41 per ticket....a lot of money for Step 5 football

Can't argue with that, we were so poor for an hour. Had a go last half an hour but just didn't play anything like we can. Shame to end the season with that today was a damp squib. Tremendous season for Torquay one of the lowest budgets in the league, have played some enjoyable football and got to a playoff final. I'm not overly bothered they didn't win it because it means they are in a massively southern biased league next year which means I can actually attend a few more games than i would have done if they'd won.

The Stevenage support was utterly dismal. It's a long way, it's on TV and champs league final in the evening, coupled with the price of everything it's no surprise it was a very low crowd, but Stevenage couldn't have had many more than 2000 there.

Said it was a mockery playing the game there, should have played it at Reading would have been easily big enough!

O Kane's a very good young player, technically good and scores goals, he probably won't be at Torquay next season and neither will the manager and probs some more. Heard noises today they've cut the budget massively for next year hence why Buckle is off to Bristol Rovers. Will almost certainly mean Torquay have the lowest budget in League 2 next season. Anything above bottom 2 would be a good year in all honesty.
