Lets be honest he truly was one of the best midfielders ever!

Best English midfielder of his generation. We should have built the England team around him, not shoved him wide left. He would not have retired so early from the England team if he had played were he wanted to. A great talent who will be missed, especially by Utd.

Officially bored by the Scholes love. 15 years of every pundit thinking he's being controversial/saying something important by suggesting that fans don't r8 Scholes as highly as those in the game do, when pretty much everyone recognises him as (a) a very good player, but slightly below the very best and (b) the world's worst tackler.

Why even bother posting you idiot? If you cared about the game at all, you'd recognise this as a memorable moment in football.

Typical and very dignified of Scholes to make a quiet announcement and retire. Could easily have announced it mid season and had a big fuss made of him.

His pomp was 98 to 05 where he'd have got in any team in the world. Some of his goals were unreal.

Shame that Big Foot was just a bit too young to really appreciate Scholes in his prime.

He may have retired, but some of his tackles are so late we'll get to see them at the start of next season.

The fact that halfbthe Barca team descended on Scholes on the full time whistle to try and get his shirt speaks volumes.

His volley from outside the box from a corner at Bradford (?) is one that definitely sticks in the mind.

Will he be getting a testimonial in the same way Gary Neville did? Or is that too much "fuss and bother" for him?

Xavi:
"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything"

Zinedine Zidane:
"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation."

Rio Ferdinand:
"He'll do ridiculous things in training like say, "You see that tree over there?" - it'll be 40 yards away - "I'm going to hit it". And he'll do it. Everyone at the club considers him the best"

Marcello Lippi:
"Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team - that goes to show how highly I have always rated him."

Laurent Blanc:
"I tell anyone who asks me - Scholes is the best English player."

Edgar Davids:
"I'm not the best. Paul Scholes is. We can all learn from Paul Scholes."

Thierry Henry:
"Without any doubt the best player in the Premiership has to be Paul Scholes. He knows how to do everything, and he is the one who directs the way his team plays. On top of all that he has that indestructible mental strength, and he is a genuine competitor."

Peter Schmeichel:
"His reading of the game is unsurpassed. He has the best eye for a pass, for what the play or the game needs at that precise moment, that I have ever seen anyone else have. He controls and distributes the play and the game better than anyone I have ever seen."

Agree with Bandini that it's an easy thing to say that Scholes was not truly valued. However I do think it's only when you see quite how revered he was by those in the game you can really appreciate that for whatever reason we didn't make the most of his talent.
