Replacements for Long (if he goes)

by Royals-lad14 » 19 Jun 2011 14:09

So with Long most likely making a move to a premier league club who would be an ideal replacement for him?
Hunt and Church i can not seeing stepping up to the plate, same as Manset i do not think he will be anywhere near as prolific as long was last season. I still think Brett Williams will be a impact player most likely next season with scoring no more than 10.
We have been linked with Marlon Harewood but i can not see that happening at all with him most likely looking to go to posh, so who would you like to see come in this summer?
I would personally love to see Adam Le fondre join i think he is a quality player and could definately prove himself at this level.

David Villa or Jamie Cureton. Both good, only doubt is Curetons age.

Wonder if Kitson would be worth a punt? Gone off the boil big time since he left us, maybe another point to prove?

Much as I love Kitson, he's not the same player any more. His legs have taken a beating and his generally weak approach to training means (IMO) as he ages he's losing what fitness and pace he had. I seem to recall he always said he'd retire at around 30 because he knew he wouldn't be able to keep up playing to a decent level far into his 30s.

If its a player from our current squad then probalbly Brett Williams. He's probably the closest match to Long in terms of pace and is another raw talent (as Long was when he joined us). If Manset can get fit enough to be effective for 90 minutes then he could well be the man.......

Not for me. It didn't work last time out and he's around 30 now so more likely to pick up injuries.

i'd take kitson back in a flash. sure he's not the same player as when he left but he's said it himself, this is home. fitness being what it was or not he'd give 100% on the pitch, and if he's free (is he?) then look at what else is out there and he's still a good option. kevin philips would be nice for a season, if he hasn't commited to someone else. natural finisher, doesn't have to work too hard he is always in the right place at the right time + experience to pass on to those around him. one i like is codi mcdonald. pacey young striker, believe available and shouldn't be costly.

i'd like to see a championship take a chance on le fondre. v.good scoring record and just needs a chance at a higher level. shouldn't cost more than 1m, perhaps with add-ons (rotherham really need the money), but will we spend that much?

+ brett williams i have a really good feeling about. he is a natural finisher, it's just his movement that has always been critised, but that will be being worked on.

+ manset has the tools and two good feet, but his weight needs to come down and hereford couldn't achieve it - can we? i guess we'll see next season.

- church has good movement but next to no pace and as discussed has never been consistent in front of goal, loans inclusive. with luck it'll all come together this season but this season is make or break for the boy or he'll find himself on his way next summer.

- hunt is a decent player but needs a strong partner up front - not church. needs to remain fit for a whole season and could easily hit 15-20 goals if he does so.

because he would have cost us over £1.5m.

As much as i thought he was absolutely t*ss last season... i can't see us investing in a new exciting striker, and i believe Simon Church will be given a bit of an opportunity to step up. I think he is more in the Shane mould than any others (as long as he can stay onside!!!!) and it seems as if McD will have a good alibi if he is playing badly for a while , saying that Shane went through the same previous season.
Saying this, i really hope Manset steps up as i rate him as the best tall, powerful striking prospect since Kitson. I think he's got decent skill too ( will never forget one of his runs against QPR and i cant remember the other team he did an amazing run against it)
I do want to clarify i do think Church was woeful last season and i dont think many clubs would give him the chance, but i reckon he has decent potential and i think cost cutting and "living within our means" will mean we will give him a chance

Ian Royal Much as I love Kitson, he's not the same player any more.

The problem with Kitson was the £5 million price tag and him thinking he was worth it.

I think we need a replacement from outside the current players if/when Long leaves. I would like to have been able to say I was confident one of Church or Manset could have stepped up to be the regular partner of Noel Hunt but neither has done enough to prove that to me yet. Difficult for me to comment on Williams as I have never seen him play. Five strikers is a lot for us so if we do bring in a new striker I would probably look to get either Church or Williams out on loan in League One if possible.
