25 years today - HAND OF GOD

by Nick Shorey my Lord! » 22 Jun 2011 09:46

Thanks to the BBC.

1986. That game. Those goals.

Memories? '86 was all about the Pannini stickers as a 9 year old. But the day after this game we were all trying to re-create the hand of god at play-time...jumpers for goal-posts...etc.

After the game I was more annoyed at Lineker's miss than Maradonna's hand ball. Did both of Shilton's feet actually leave the ground?

But the second goal was absolute class.

Yeah, the petty nonsense does distract from just how great a player Maradonna was at that point of his career.

Although the defence did stand off him and let him run at them.

My thoughts exactly. Not one leg or put in and it's a fairly straight run, not even a wiggly maze a la Messi.

I missed the moment, apparently, when Fenwick tried to elbow him in the face...........................

In that case we probably deserved it.

Kenny Sansom was on TalkSport this morning talking about the game (he played in it - for those younger readers). He said Steve Hodge had a nightmare game (loss of concentration at crucial times), but managed to swap shirts with Diego at the final whistle. The shirt is now worth £250k, so Hodge had the last laugh.

Exactly - the way he puts the keeper down is class but the rest of it is shoddy, shoddy, defending

And wut was Steve Hodge doing lofting the ball up like that for Madonna's handball?

I'd like to propose that this was England's best chance of winning the WC since 1966

And I'd counter with 2002.

France and Argentina out in the grpoup stage, 1 up against a 10-man Braizil team, and with Turkey awaiting in the semi-finals and a poor German side that they'd thumped 5-1 in the qualifiers in the final.

It was there for the taking and they blew it!

Technically, Dirk you are incorrect as at the end of the '86 WC it was England's best chance of winning the World Cup since 1966.

Going by your post though you could probably chuck 1990 into the mix as well - win the penalty shootout and it was the Argies in the final who weren't playing as well as they did (minus the HoG) in 1986.

So Kebe-esque with the added bonus of class at the end. What more do you want?

I wasn't born at the time but I assume that it led to moaning fans, hounding of the manager, shouting in the streets at cheating foreign b*stards who aren't even from Argentina and calling for the FA to change the youth development.

based on those highlights (I was 5 at the time) we look fitter and more athletic, but just as workmanlike and plodding as then.
