6ft Kerplunk Did both of Shilton's feet actually leave the ground?

He has significant form in this area. On those highlights, he makes a complete dog's breakfast of tipping over a free-kick (from Maradona I think) that most goalkeepers these days would probably catch. And let's not even go near the 1990 semi final goal that deflected off Paul Parker........ how the hell that managed to go in, directly over his head at about 3 miles per hour is still a complete mystery

IIRC

England were totally outplayed until the last 15 minutes when John Barnes came on. Earlier in the tournament, England were desperately poor in their first two games and were lucky to be playing Poland who had already qualified in the third game or they would probably have gone out in the group stage.

Performances also improved with an injury to Brian Robson and the suspension of Ray Wilkins

It was only 6 years after this that we were promised things would only get better for the England team and that we would be world beaters before too long!

To the suits that started the Premier League, I salute you.

Just before Maradona scores his second wonder goal. There is a shocking foul on an England player not spotted by the ref which lead to the ball going to Maradona and he scores one of the most famous goals in World Cup history. Whilst the hand of God was blatent cheating it was the officials who failed to see something everyone else sore. Here we are 25 years later and we are still no closer to video replays.

I always wonder about "pass completion" as a measure of success. Do the statistics differentiate the type of pass - that's being completed?

Because in my book a 50-yard diagonal pass that lands at the feet of the running winger is worth 20 8-yard tippy-tappies across the back four.

Svlad Cjelli
bobbybottler I'd like to propose that this was England's best chance of winning the WC since 1966

And I'd counter with 2002.

France and Argentina out in the grpoup stage, 1 up against a 10-man Braizil team, and with Turkey awaiting in the semi-finals and a poor German side that they'd thumped 5-1 in the qualifiers in the final.

It was there for the taking and they blew it!

I would say Italia 90

If we had won the shootout in the Semi against the Huns we would probably have beaten a poor Argie side in the final.

Going back to the subject matter, every time I see the Azteca Stadium I think about that moment, although the murals on the walls outside the Stadium of Maradona kind of jogs the memory a bit.

I still remember being more annoyed about the Lineker miss than the Maradona goal. I still cannot believe how he didn't put that one away.

Finally, Maradona is a cheating pcunt and I hope he dies a slow and painful death sometime soon.
