Safe Standing roadshow

by Svlad Cjelli » 11 Jul 2011 12:48

People may be interested in the FSF safe-standing roadshow http://www.safestandingroadshow.co.uk which is currently touring grounds across the country letting people see exactly what safe-standing means - and dispelling the rumours that this is anything to do with a "return to terraces."

Once this unit is shifted off the lorry it comes on, then people can sit and stand on it, assess the sight-lines, and actually get a proper understanding of what safe-standing actually is.

SC, is the group's proposal that whole grounds should be redeveloped for safe-standing, or individual stands? Taking the survey at Wolves, presumably the 74% who did not wish to stand would have the option to do so in 'seated' parts of the ground?

The reality is that there is no real 'choice' to be had where a group decide to stand, everyone behind them will have to follow suit. And the 'seats' of this safe standing unit are redundant - admittedly I've never sat in one, but I'd hazard a guess that the horizontal bars block one's view a tad, if you are sat down.

An example layout is : where the red areas would be safe-standing areas.

But the reality is that the campaign does not proscribe any such limit - the whole point of the campaign is the removal of legislation that makes it illegal to install safe-standing.

Once that's done, individual clubs would have the power to install whatever was appropriate to their own local circumstances and local demand.

Surely the people in the yellow behind the red area wouldn't be able to see anything, if they are all stood infront of them!?

Not if the bottom row of yellow seats is high enough above the last red safe-standing row - for instance above a block saying "Waitrose" on it?

I'm not sure it means anything - just the rest of teh corner that's not a safe-standing area. Might be away fans - seated area.

Just for the record, I've seen this and asked about how it would fit in at the Mad Stad. I was told:

- each "seat" or safe standing area costs twice as much as a plastic seat, but is made of metal and would therefore be longer lasting.

- the bars were set at that height because of some sort of regulation about crowd control. The hope is that because each rail is for one person - or at the most two - they can possibly be lowered.

- the Mad Stad is a relatively new stadium and was built all-seater so an extra aluminium step could be added between levels to fit extra rows of safe-standing seats between the rows as they are now. That would mean each level would be on a par with the steps up and down.

- there may be some conflict with regulations about evacuation times for a stand and the exits may have to be made bigger/more accessible.

...according to the guy who was exhibiting it.
