Copa America 2011

by Compo's Hat » 01 Jul 2011 02:38

Something good for us night owls to take us to the start of the season.

Good previews of the teams http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/foot ... 00536.html

Think it'll be difficult to beat Argentina on their home patch but hoping Paraguay and Chile carry over their good World Cup form.

I was reading somewhere that it will be quite a young Brazil side as they start preparing them for the World Cup in 3 years, so I don't fancy them this time around. Can't see past the dirty cheating scummy Argies.

Be good if the television coverage theme tune, to the tune of that song from West Side Story, was:

Copa-a Copa America
Copa-a Copa America
Copa-a Copa America
Copa-a Copa America

This has got to be up there with some of the classic open goal misses by Dayro Moreno for Colombia against Argentina.

Landlocked Bolivia utterly losing the plot in their second round match w/Costa Rica made for some interesting viewing

'Bout damn time, too --not much to see in this competition to date, although Uruguay and Chile have kept it fairly interesting for an hour

Easily the best 10 minutes of the tournament so far and easily the best game so far. Hopefully it's finally starting to get going now.

Could be in for some interesting final matches with Argentina and Uruguay both in 3rd place.

I think CR, who have to play the hosts in the group stage finale and are likely therefore to finish third in Group A*, are going to rue not having run up a tally playing against Bolivia's nine men for the final quarter of an hour (and LOL @ the double save sequence on the PK after the comedy handball on the preceding goal-bound effort; plus they rattled the woodwork real good on at least two occasions that I saw and as a general thing just didn't press their numerical advantage)

Now with two rounds completed in Groups A and C, every side has dropped points, and none have looked particularly good

Group B play their second round of matches tonite after a pair of goalless draws the first time thru

Final matches in Group A: Colombia v. Bolivia 8:00 PM Sunday, and Argentina v. Costa Rica 1:45 AM on Tuesday (times BST)

Bolivia will be missing three regulars on account of the two sendings off and another for accumulated cautions --and this is a side that missed a glorious chance to go two up on Argentina in the curtain-raiser before gamely holding on for a point

*That's me calling it Argentina to win, and handsomely

So with all of the second round of group play completed, a baseballing nation is sat atop a group with Brazil, Paraguay and Ecuador in it (and I found the second half of Venezuela-Ecuador well worth watching)

Colombia look to book a place in the quarters when they wrap up their group stage card v. Bolivia tonite and should do, and a point for them also would see Venezuela, Chile and Peru safely thru on 4 points from two matches for all

Actually think Chile along with Colombia are the two best sides at the moment, amazing what a win on the opening round of matches does for confidence. Amazing to think all the group favourites are stuck in third position and haven't a win between them.

Oh, and i really see Argentina struggling tonight. They lack ideas at times and the crowd will get on their back tonight as they try and play everything through Messi again.

Totally echoed on the latter --very composed, unfussed and not trying to do more than necessary, which you want to see in cup play (no running up a tally on a Bolivia side that they had well beaten within a half an hour on Sunday nite, and no cautions issued them along the way, so they're all set to open the quarters on Saturday against the eventual runners-up from Group B)

Compo's Hat Oh, and i really see Argentina struggling tonight. They lack ideas at times and the crowd will get on their back tonight as they try and play everything through Messi again.

Guzman out for yellow cards picked up in both of the two CR matches played, and they've sent their Olympic team as it is --I wouldn't be surprised to see Argentina hang five on 'em tbh

Back to Chile, they could finish anywhere from top to third in Group C, and I'm thinking that they'll draw with Peru on Tuesday nite and like Uruguay to stomp Mexico Olimpico in the late one to finish top on GD

Colombia should have beaten Argentina with an excellent counter attacking performance, they've finally worked out that they need to get the ball out wide and feed Falcao with crosses.

Argentina on paper should win tonight but Bolivia and Colombia against 10 men have struggled to break them down. Do like Campbell up front for them who i can see ending up at a European club.

Think Chile will beat Peru who haven't exactly looked great.

If you're asking me...

No English-language TV coverage of the CopAm here (as usual), but the Spanish-language networks have it all sorted via their network-affiliated local stations (ditto)

List of networks carrying tonite's match (the local TeleFutura affiliate's got this one where I am...er, Channel 60 WXFT Aurora/Chi)
