I quite liked the video montage of 'fans through the ages' at the bottom of the BBC report.

For what it's worth I reckon a day out at football is reasonably priced. At least it is outside the Premier League anyway.

Svlad Cjelli And, floyd__streete, let me put you in a situation where you're doing your job to the best of your ability, trying your best and doing exactly what your manager had told you do to, and you start getting abused by a bunch of oiks.

Do you :

a) ignore them and carry on with your work
b) respond in kind.

I think Knowing you as I do I think b) is the most likely answer, and why would that change with the amount of money you're being paid or who is paying it (directly or indirectly)?

Footballer in being human shocker.

I get abused as part of my job. If I respond at all I get in shit from my boss and if I respond in kind I get sacked. Crap argument.

But tbf that is probably a major part of your job, Ian, and one of the skills for which you were in all probability hired for. I'm not sure that's the case for footballers.

Dealing with barracking from supporters isn't a major part of the job!? Do me a favour, what world are you living in!

As independent help in place to offer impartial advice and assistance I don't consider it a major part of my job to get abuse from people who do not have either a valid complaint or one with which I can help. I do however deal with it when it happens in as professional manner as possible. Which doesn't involve telling them to "piss off" which would be a reasonable verbal equivalent. And please understand that I have a very low tolerance of being told I'm lazy, incompetent or corrupt.

Footballers are customer facing, just as I am.

But that's not what they are hired for. They're hired to play football. That's what I meant. The barracking and dealing with it is isn't that high up in importance for the job, it's more of a by-product.

An integral part of which involves football fans during games and in publicity events.

But again, it's not what they're hired to do. I can do that, but I'm not going to get hired to play as a centre-forward unless I can score a few good goals. Dealing with that and the opposition probably comes a lot higher up the scale of importance. Mind you, if they're good with children and animals and want to achieve world peace it's a bonus for the club.

I'd suggest my interview didn't contain a bit where a random member of the public called up and called me a twat to see if I could deal with it. I was employed mainly for reasons other than my ability to not tell a twat to oxf*rd off. I'd be sacked if I did though.

Svlad Cjelli In principle, yes. But everyone is human, and can't really be blamed that much for snapping in the event of rolonged, unfair criticism.

Especially Floyde, I'd wager .....

I'm not in the 'entertainment' industry (the word 'entertainment' admittedly is pishing it when describing RFC players). I liken it to a stand-up who can't deal with a heckler. He's paid to watch you so yours is the last laugh, deal with it with a bit of humility.
