Newspaper reporting of the Football League

by Jerry St Clair » 07 Aug 2011 15:24

Articles in both the Sunday Times and the Observer today explaining the almost complete lack of reports on yesterdays games in the Football League. The newspaper co-operative are in dispute with the league over the re-negotiation of the contract for reporter accreditation at games.

Got me thinking though. Does it actually matter that there are no reports in newspapers in the interwebz age? Does anybody actually read match reports in the Sunday papers?

I certainly do, but it's a habitual thing. Sunday paper, cup of tea or a beer in the garden, spend an hour reading the sport section of the Times, and then pretend to be cultural by randomly flicking through the other 6 billion pages of guff you get on a Sunday.

i don't bother with newspapers anymore. having said that we're left with the incompetence of the likes of the bbc who and I quote "The home side appeared set for victory before the intervention of Manset, who pulled a goal back for Reading with a long range strike after 86 minutes." with reports like that i'd sooner rely on forums for after match analysis.

A big 'greed with FriJay's Legacy. What reports there have been are rarely worth reading and are more often than not infuriating in their basic errors.

It depends on whether you regarding reading as something to enjoy, or just about gaining information.

I love sitting down and pouring over a fat sports section, reading reports of multiple games etc. You just can't get that from the internet, where the reporting standard is normally far worse, and is on a medium which doesn't lend itself to lengthy spells of reading.

Maybe I'm part of a dying breed that doesn't see a surge of things being reported in 140 letters or less as an improvement.

Saying that, the Sunday Mirror (full of League match reports BTW) did somehow manage to rate Manset at 5/10, our joint worst player.

Googling this a bit, it appears the issue might center around live blogging and tweeting of match opinion by journalists, which of course is fine if you are a paying customer and fan, but the FL and PL have said is not on for the press.

Ah, that explains why I could barely find anything about the Championship in the Observer yesterday. I would always take the Sunday papers over the internet for match reports and opinion.
