Good article in yesterday's Times (I think it was Patrick Barclay) arguing for more competitive international games, perhaps a world cup every 2 years, pre-qualifying for the lesser nations and countries limited to one friendly a season. Barclay argued that this might help to address the imbalance in the importance given to international games, not least the situation where players are paid all year round by clubs only to see them injured playing international games, albeit covered by some form of insurance. More competitive fixtures means more money into the international game, and fewer meaningless friendlies like this game with Holland - the author cited the Van Basten game, our 4-goal win at Euro 96, and some others, as examples of what these games 'should' be like.
