last night's railway arms debate..

by frimmers3 » 04 Jul 2011 11:00

so..i met up with an old mate or two(part of my rebuilding bridges campaign) at this famous hostelry in frimley high street, and of course after dissing everybody the talk moved on to football: nub of the issue was it was agreed in the main that the english premier league was perhaps the most exciting platform in world terms, but was due to style ill equipped to threaten at international level.the debate(involving all the sad bastards in the pub come closing time,me included)seemed to reckon that this was the case...would be interested to hear your views...

If understood the question I'd comment on it.

For instance how could the Premier League possibly threaten at international level when it's a competition for clubs not nations?

PL clubs have done fairly well in European competitions in recent years, but if this is meant to be a question about England competing internationally whilst also hosting the PL that's been discussed to death a a couple of threads very recently.

Understood and read little of the OP, but I'd like to hear more about the rebuilding bridges campaign.

I find the Premier League predictable and boring. It's the clubs like Blackpool that surprise people for a while which make it more watchable for me but I don't get much out of the Premier League. Prefer the Bundersliga (sp?) and Championship for excitement.

It's only really hailed as the world's best by people who don't ever see anything else to compare.

As for the second part, maybe the england team would do better if it was allowed to sign foreign players, like the premier league clubs are.

Ok, I'll bite. Who, apart from Sky and the British media say that the PL is hailed as the world's best? World's best at what? 200mph hoof-ball?

As has been said by the british media Barcelona would struggle in the premier league

Champions league final kind of proved their point

That's the sort of comment you regularly heard 20 years ago about top sides in other leagues, but I love to see a single example of that being said about the current Barcelona team.

is weybridgewanderer part of the British media?

He isn't, after all, saying they would struggle. He's saying the British media was saying they'd struggle, which is why I said I'd like to see a contemporary article suggesting that.

It's rather like people moaning about the English press overhyping the England team before tournaments, saying we'll win etc. Such opinions used to be common in the 80s, but you'd have to trawl through a lot of papers to find one these days.

Agree on both points Rev.
The star players in the Premier league are the foreigners and without them English clubs would get nowhere near the later stages of the European competitions.
