holocaust means 'a massive slaughter', so in comparison to words used to describe a player getting outplayed by the opposing player, like 'he's getting murdered by Nani', then he hasn't really said much wrong.

Despite this its a poor choice of words in todays wanky world.

I don't think he should be sacked for it, but I don't think it was a slip of the tongue. It's not a phrase commonly used that should be avoided in public. My guess is that he was trying to get a "catchphrase" in the was that Paul Merson is always inventing stupid rhyming slang.
