oxf*rd me!

Reading beat Port Vale that afternoon, and I watched the England match from a hotel in Manchester with The Cube and a couple of others (apologies for forgetting if you're nobbers!) before the ITV Digital Footie Quiz filming the next day.

Fond memories of the TV signal cutting out just before we scored our 2nd and having to listen to it on the radio until it came back when we were 4-1 up...

Watched it down my local - absoultely drenched in beer when the 5th went in.

Amazing to think about the relative successes of the two teams since then though - Germany have been to a WC final, two WC semis and an EC final whereas England haven't got past the quarter final stage (and got spanked 4-1 at SA 2010). One wonders if they'd have had that success if the result had been reversed (not that I'm suggesting England would have done the same if we'd lost 5-1 that day).

I'm guessing you read the BBC article then.

I think we all remember it so much because it was so unexpected and exceptional - so thsi was teh blip result rather than performances since.

My fondest memory from the day is being sure we were going to score from the set-piece that led to Gerrard's goal and putting my pint down in preparation so I could go mental without getting soaked 8)

I can honestly say I hadn't - I have now though 8)

I'm not great with modern history, but I suppose you could say that there are parallels with the war and how the German infrastructure (roads, rail etc) has come on far more since 1945 then ours has. Perhaps losing is the new winning.....

Haha, well fair play on making every point the BBC article made in that one paragraph. :P

Fair point - especially as a the first home game in that qualifying group was the torrid 1-0 loss in Keegan's (and Old Wembley's) last game.

Pretty simple points to make though - and the same has happened in English cricket. We were so shit in the late 90's / early 2000's that a fundamental review took place and now look at us. Even the complacency that set in after the 2005 Ashes (which papered over some cracks and contributed to our 5-0 thrashing in 05/06) has now gone. Incidentally, the Aussies are now doing a similar review process.

To think I neglected to mention my favourite part of this - a german exchange program was running at my school over the summer and a few of my mates had Germans visiting around the time of the result - cue multiple chants of FUNF EINS! FUNF EINS! in their direction when school reconvened a few weeks later

Working in a pub with no telly.

At some point in the night, a rumour went around that England were 4-1 up.

Cue mocking.

Later on, it went to 5 and we had to work out how to rig up a telly for the highlights. :|

My memory is being in the pub when the third went in the pub went wild and some poor chap fell out of his wheelchair in the excitement! He didn't give a toss he just lied on the floor with a big grin on his face only pissed off cus he had spilled his pint.
What happened after that game? The worst German team I can remember had an easy passage to the final whilst we were dumped by eventual winners Brazil in the last 8.

It was after this game that I rang BBC Radio Stoke, and suggested that the Port Vale Manager, Brian Horton, should consider his position in the light of the result.....to be followed on by loads of Vale fans agreeing with me!

Had to make do with crappy radio commentary for the 1st half of the England game....

Why all the fuss over what was a qualifier? No wonder this country is in decline - too many people looking backwards. Now, in my day...
