IF Celtic and Rangers were to join the English league, they could succeed in the long term. They have fan bases and infrastructure to match/better the likes of Newcastle, Villa, Chelsea, Leeds, Everton, West Ham, Man City and Spurs. Note that clubs listed have had very different levels of success based upon club management and financial backing. This would apply to Celtic and Rangers too; they would need to be run responsibly and effectively to be regular top 10 material challenging for Europe. To break into the top 4 and catch up on those with a massive head start, they may need wealthy backers ala Chelsea and Man City. Based solely upon fanbase, infrastructure and history, they'd definitely be in the top 10-15 clubs in the country.

In the short term, it would be a massive slog if they went straight into the Premiership. It's not a level playing field between England and Scotland; European competition this season has shown this. They would have to act in a similar way to a promoted club; using the new finances to improve their squad whilst being mindful of the risk of relegation. Existing players would need to step up quickly; the Old Firm pair may be of Championship standard, but they're used to playing against opposition closer to League 1 level. Top SPL players have come to the Championship in the past and struggled. Kris Boyd at Boro is a classic example. Noel Hunt got 18 for Dundee largely playing on the wing; he is a good/average Championship player who I wouldn't trust leading our line in the Premiership.

I would expect to see them right in the relegation scrap in the 1st season, but equally if they did go down they'd have the fanbase and resources to keep hold of better players. I could see them bouncing back or yo-yoing for a while. I reckon it would take them about 5 years to establish in the Premiership, with a further 5 years or so until they began to consistently challenge for European football or further.

I'd like to see it to be honest. They'd offer a lot more to the Premiership than all these Lancashire clubs with averages attendances lower than our Championship figures.

Would you have said that if Celtic had won at the weekend and then lost to a smaller team in the League Cup?

I would have laughed at their defeat, but everyone knows the league is more important. Funny, no threads appeared after the Rangers win on sunday, don't think a single post was made that day.

Finerain - what's the background to you supporting Rangers? Is there anything else to it other than your anti-Cathotlic / right-wing leanings?

Its got nothing to do with religion, my entire mums side of the family is catholic. So I do enjoy idiots on here thinking im a bigot

I once was strong m8's with a celtic girl from oban whilst in australia. We'd give each other banter day in day out and one night while pissed she divulged she was a protestant and I told her my roots showing her I actually had a st christopher chain round my neck i'd been given to stay safe on my travels. We both shared a few lols as this was not expected. Depsite what the average englishman reading the Sun thinks, the sectarian issues are all just barks and no real bites. Both clubs do have Idiots, but when you are in the top 10 supported clubs in the world, that'll happen.

Dads side is from up there, but he's not a Rangers fan, I just started watching them at a young age and become interested around the time of gazza playing for them and its stuck ever since. Wasn't remotely interested in sectarianism and i'm not to this day. I dislike celtic and what they stand for but being catholic is probably one of their better qualities. The dislike for the Irish is complete arse also, got plenty of mates from the South who are top people. You'd also be shocked that a few shamrock rovers fans are so annoyed with the amount of plastic celtic fans going to their games they've taken to supporting Rangers in recent times and posting on the gersforum.co.uk. They are thoroughly welcome there.

As for right-wing politics, not sure when I last went on a windup on those threads, but no one( people with brains) actually believed I generally was serious in my posting on AE.

If you have a read of kerrydale street you'd know what I mean. Blinkered views on defeats, conspiracy theories towards referees in scotland, embarassed by none of their own actions yet offended by everything rangers do. Called up for sectarian chanting on the BBC...instead of condemning the supporters involved, they sent over 1,000 written complaints to the BBC for calling them out for it. 500 page thread where most of their support claims to be financial experts on rangers going bust, etc, etc

Absolutely nothing to do with catholocism. Just a very irritating set of supporters.

Probably because the SPL is just as bad as the MLS so they're used to playing at a crap standard.
