Given England's history of people getting injured before the first game even kicks off I recko if you take Rooney you need 4 other strikers in the squad

BTW if they don't take him does his ban count as served as he's not strictly eligible for the 3 group games?

Just imagine the stick people would give Capello if a striker got injured in training / sent off in the 1st game and we were left with little / no options on the bench because we had a bloody passenger in the squad.

Still could get reduced to 2 games (although unlikely) but if he continues his form, he should still go to the finals. Yes if England don't make it then will be seen as poor move but as others have pointed a fresh rooney in the quarters would be a big plus either starting or coming on!

That's the manager's job, though - making big decisions and taking risks like this. That's why they get paid so much.

Bandini As I wrote before, there's always at least one player doing nothing, so I don't believe that for the 3 group games our chances are materially improved by having 20 outfield players instead of 19.

But when Walcott was taken "for the experience" a few years ago when he was too young, we actually ran out of strikers.

But we still had plenty of left overs - off the top of my head did Carrick, Bridge or Jenas get any games. I think that Sol went as well - did he play? That's a lot of spare places.

EDIT: And did we run out of strikers in the group games?

I wouldn't take him.

If we get knocked out in the group stages then obviously it's totally pointless having him there in any case.

If we qualify from the group stages then that means we must have played pretty well, so what message does it send to the rest of the team if you change a successful side the moment someone is available? "Cheers for qetting to the quarter finals lads, now the big boys play in the proper games"

Fcuk him. Deserves to sit at home and watch it on TV for being so stupid. If his first touch had been better none of this would be an issue anyway.

Its likely we will only play 1 up top anyway, with the likes of Young, Walcott, Milner, Parker, Wilshere, Lampard, Gerrard etc playing in a midfield 5 (1 supporting).......so i dont see it being a problem

Who else would we take?

Bent, Carroll, Defoe and Welbeck are hardly going to worry the Germans.

So then sit him on the bench for the q/f - if then he comes on and scores the winner he can start the semi final.

Any three of them plus Rooney are unlikely to worry the Germans.

Of course he is, but its "cool" for England fans to knock our best/better players

Rooney would walk in to any team in the world - even Spain.

When he wants to be, yes. But he has weaknesses that international teams know how to target.

There is no way he will be left behind. You cant win the competition in the Group stages. Id say if we are to have any chance of winning it, we'd need an in form Rooney playing in the matches that count the most, ie, the last 3 games. Not that we're going to win it, but leaving him behind is like admitting defeat before you've started. You never know, if we take him and we get through the groups it might turn out a blessing in disguise.

IMHO leaving him behind would be like working on being a team rather than basing everything around one player.

I'd much rather see a team of younger players who are enthusiastic and compltely committed to the cause, than have it all resting on senior players with massive egos who frequently seem not to care very much or be very committed to the team.

Being the best English player in the premier league doesn't mean you'd walk into any team in the world, even Spain.
