S Coppell could have been our Sir Alex Ferguson, would have been great to have a manager that stayed and achieved continued success.

Look at Fulham Brum and Stoke in europe, and you wonder why it would have been so wrong for us. Sadly we were told we were not ready, will we now ever be ready to play in Europe.

Ian Royal
Friday's Legacy
JC Portsmouth News & Daily Mail report Steve Coppell considering managers job at Portsmouth

i don't understand what this has got to do with reading football club.

Focher anyone who wants Coppell back are out of their tiny minds.

what absolute kack. the best manager in our history who built the best team in our history and in the football league's history on a tightly controlled budget and you wouldn't have him back? you are hard to please.

He's lost the drive and has retired from management. I'd say that's a pretty good reason not to want him back.

Maurice Evans was a good manager for us, not sure I'd want him back now though

Unbelievable.Mr Know It all not knowing Evans has died, what an imposter you are Ian......

Oh no, apparently he KNOWS he died, and that was his point. And like I said, a pathetic point to make.

I'd rather see Coppell as England manager after Capello - but I'm not sure he could handle all those egos. I'd much prefer to see him there than at Pompey though.

Coppell as stated is the best manager we've ever had, the 2005/2006 was a season that will never be beaten for me, very closely followed by the following season. People are to quick to forget the utter utter shit served up the following season, and even bigger shit served up in the 2nd half of the season after that.

He has a shelf life, and whilst he will quite rightly remain a total legend in every Reading fans eyes, including mine, its the old ex girlfriend scenario, never go back.

Depends which Steve Coppell!

If it was the manager we had who took us into the Premiership and kept us there, playing well for the first season, I'd be over the moon. If it was the chap that held too much faith in his players, failed to move to invest and saw our team dismantled I'd rather not.

Being "a nice guy" doesn't mean you'll be a success.

Glad he took my advice then!

Michael Appleton - assistant coach or something at WBA takes charge at Pompey - cheap option or what?!

Portsmouth got rightly criticised for spending more money than they could afford.

Now when they make a managerial appointment on the cheap because they can't afford to spend more they get ridiculed.

They can't win ......

How often does it work out tho? We're pretty lucky in that respect. More often than not it's prove a mistake. Certainly hope so in this case.

More often than not it works as well as bringing in an outsider. In clubs who aren't in a position to go out and buy you whole new teams, what's crucial is being able to get the best out of existing squads - and already knowing them can be a real advantage.

I give you Nigel Adkins at Scunny, for instance.

Is this the same Coppell that has a history of walking out of clubs ? Is generally a private man, so it is doubtful that even his wife knows what he is thinking ?!?

If I were a chairman, I would not go near him. We got lucky. End of.

Appleton, as far as I know, has never managed a team before - other than being "in charge" for a couple of weeks when WBA were in between managers. It's still a punt - cheap option or not.

Come off it, Dirk. I can't think of any English clubs who have had a sustained period of domestic and European success by repeatedly promoting from within their own "Boot Room".

Every managerial appointment is. If you're going to punt, you might as well go for the lowest financial risk option.

LOL - a habit?? The reasons were perfectly clear why he walked out on Bristol City - he was promised stuff but the chairman didn't deliver when he got there.

Man City was a strange one - lots of rumours about that. He was at Brentford and Palace and didn't walk out and he didn't walk out on us either.

Very unfair summary.

He left Man City and Bristol City for whatever reasons - broken promises seems to be the most likely route cause which resulted in him not enjoying it and deciding to leave of his own accord.

But because he walked he claimed no compensation from either club. Hugely preferable to him sticking around for a year, getting a big wage for not doing a great job, getting sacked and receiving a pay-off of a million or two.

I'd have thought he's EXACTLY the sort of manager that a chairman with integrity the match of Coppell's would fall over themselves to hire. (But of course there aren't many of those around.)
