FA Cup vs Champions League

by Silver Fox » 22 Nov 2011 20:44

I'm not one of those bores that says they're fed up with the way football is going so they're going to start going to non-league games but there really aren't enough >'s in the world to help describe how much more interesting the first round of the FA cup is than "matchday 5" of the "champions" league, even with the potentail for LOLz of Man City getting beaten

On a side note, are ITV* showing a cup replay tomorrow or an exhilarating Arsenal/Chelsea game? Pretty shoddy if it's the latter

I fail to see how Bollockton Town kicking seven shades of shit out of Middleofnowhere United, with a bit of football hidden somewhere in the mix, can be more entertaining than watching some of the best players in the world play football, but each to their own.

Depends what you find entertaining. For me football is about passion.

So give me the choice and I'll take 22 adequate players kicking lumps out of each other at breakneck pace ahead all the pretty, walking-pace, tippy-tappy football with step-overs, Cryuff turns, diving and pretentious goal celebrations in the world.

Straight from the FSF manual. Chapter 7 I believe.

This Pavlovian obsession is so tedious - you used to troll with wit and imagination, but that's now just a distant memory.

And you used to offer a refreshing outlook on football before you got brainwashed.

Back to the question though and I have to say that the United game last night was a very good game. Quick end to end attacking football. And if it’s passion that you’re after then there aren’t enough >>>>>> in the world for the difference between Napoli last night and anything you’ll ever see at a game involving Maidenhead.

The FA cup is dead. One good game a year. I suppose we get to see some of Man Utd and Arsenal's youth team, which can be interesting occasionally.

Champions League all the way.

I don't watch the Chelsea games, to be fair.

I'd opt for the FA Cup as it's nice to see some different teams on the box (ESPN is showing Bath v Dagenham tonight and showed Stourbridge beating Plymouth last night) rather than the same old boring, overpaid faces going through the motions of trying to qualify for a tinpot joke of a competition while all the pundits drone on about how wonderful it all is.

... Well - I opted for an FA VASE replay last night - mad semi-legal dash along the M4 :? - freezin' cold - swirly mist - crappy lager at half time - and the best goal I've seen scored this season - which shone out like a Sapphire in a Bucket of Sh!t ### - made the whole thing worthwhile - but then I'm old and very sad!

....but I'll still be up in the Norf Stand on Tue more in hope than expectation that our season might actually start vs Posh.... :?

Would have gone out somewhere daft tonight too but the Kids need ferrying about ....

Could have been worse - could have drifted over to Stalag Scours where the game got Fogged Off after an hour!

Staying in to fall asleep in front of a choice of The @rse or Chelski - is there a Cup replay on; I was assuming they won't be showing Bath City or Walsall?

### borrowed this phrase - I heard it used by Watford Fans describing 'Bluther Misset's' time at Inter/AC or wherever he went?

I couldn't give a rats arse about european football unless the team I support is in it. And then only the games my team is playing in.

The FA Cup is far superior. The technical quality may not be comparable in the slightest, but it still produces a far more interesting competition. I'd much rather watch Stevenage Borough getting stuck into Barnsley than Villarreal vs Dynamo Kiev. oxf*rd it, even the draw is more interesting than most Chelsea chumpions leage matches.

Yeah, don't agree with DG about the passion thing. For me, the attraction of non league is terracing, freedom to move around the ground - don't like crowds of people anyway, particularly Reading fans stood in my way in the crowded concourse dutifully queuing for overpriced flat beer or absolutely rancid food - and the ability to have a beer on said terrace. Quality of football is crap? Yep, absolutely is but to be honest I just end up chatting sh*t to my mates anyway so I may as well pay as little as possible for the privilege. I lke it as an antidote to paying £25 to watch Reading players who are paid all too well to be generally absolutely useless at their jobs.

European football? I am only fractionally bothered about it. The group stage is a dull format weighted in favour of the rich clubs, not a fan of two legged games anyway because the first leg is always a bit of a phony war. Passing interest, will probably watch the final.

Knock out, non-seeded competition > group stage followed by two legged matches.
