The pub on the river at York (can't remember the name). Did a fantastic takeaway turkey.

Actually I don't think it was intended to be a takeaway and certainly not the whole bird but a Reading skinhead decided otherwise!

That was the Riverside. I was there that day  I remember someone pissing in the coin tray of a fruit machine.

My favourite has to be the New Inn at Brentford. Remember being there back in 93 and suggesting to Ark Royal at 2.20 that it might be an idea to get into the ground. The pub was packed to the rafters. Just after getting in the ground, they closed the turnstiles!

Had to go in the crappy seats above the terrace that day. What I remember most of that day is the buck tooth geordie simpleton's goal celebration in front of us & the fact that Blackie missed his first game for 50 years because of the lock out situation. He later claimed to have sneaked in the home end during the second half.

My choice is The Staff of Life in Bury.

I remember being in the New Inn and having the exact same conversation. Got to the ground to find and enormous queue at the turnstiles and a copper on a police horse trying to drag a chap off the roof of the turnstile block as he tried to get in. We stayed in the queue but got in. I think they closed the turnstiles shortly afterwards.

The Met were utter kahunts that day, At the end of the game a line of them walked in front of the away end in riot gear and with dogs in one of the most unnecessary and provocative displays I've ever seen by the police at a football match. Anyone would think they wanted it to kick off........

Someone was on 606 afterwards saying Blackie had got in on about 75 mins when they opened the exits.

That was almost certainly a friend of mine. Last time I saw him at a football match he was being fromarched away from the ground at Tranmere in the play-off semis.

He is now a Managing Director at one of the world's largest investment banks, so I doubt he has time to get arrested at football matches these days.

Trust The Royals to have a better class of football hooligan!

Any chance he could get his bank to buy out Madejski?

Rutland Arms (Portsmouth)
Our Mutual Friend (Stevenage)
Stratford Haven (Nottingham Forest)
The George at London Bridge for Millwall .....or Palace
The one on the Leyton High Road near Orients ground

There is one in Bristol centre city but I cannot remember its name - Compo will know it as it has an entire bar of Jagermeister

**Edit** Oh yes and the New Inn Brentford and I'm fairly sure there is a pub on another corner of the ground called The Griffin?

best one I'd like to have as a local would be the Vat and Fiddle in Nottingham (but I also appreciated Notts County allowing away fans to use their club bar when visiting Forest. Attractive German and Polish barstaff too ftw).

The Goal Post at Wolves is surprisingly friendly, they even allow home fans in. There was no bother the two times I've drank in there with a 60:40 RFC/ Wolves split. Mind you, we won both times and I did not go back after the game.

The Round Robin near Wigan's away end is probably the worst. It is basically a Berni Inn carvery. We were recommended to go to the George Orwell, supposedly a great Northern pub, but we didn't. My fault.

ps Brentford's ground famously has a pub on each corner. It'd be cool to do those, never have.

The Arkles in Anfield is decent enough. just a shame about the whining accents. Friendly enough punters.

I've had the pleasure of getting into The Albert next to The Kop end and naturally steeped in history but busy as hell. I got served in there despite the negative gaze of a few home supporters.

I wouldn't call The Orwell a great Northern pub, it's basically a tarted up old warehouse where the pier used to be.
