No mention of Ruel Fox?

Surprising.

City are coming in for him as cover for Adam Johnson, so there's still time.

Well he was 21, hadn't played for Holland yet, and had 15 goals in 2 and a bit seasons.

TBM
No Fixed Abode Alonso.

Alonso is a good shout but the others haven't played in the league long enough to qualify

Players 'past' or 'current'.

Norman Whiteside
Remi Moses

In fact you could probably get an 11 from just United in the 70's and 80's.

There are younger and less experienced players who go for much much more than that, I give you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lukaku as exhibit A.

My personal bias would have me pointing (vigorously) at Paul McGrath.

Wouldn't risk that if he was in the room with you.

Far fewer of them in 2004.

Lukaku had played 73 league games to Van Persie's 59, and had 33 league goals to Van Persie's 15, when he left Anderlecht, and already had 13 caps for Belgium.

Add in the fact that Van Persie joined Arsenal in 2004, whilst Lukaku signed for Chelsea in 2011 where players values have increased exponentially in the intervening period, especially for those deemed to have huge potential, and I can only conclude that exhibit A isn't a very good example of your point.
