Sponsorship

by Friday's Legacy » 24 Jan 2012 16:59

when are the contracts up for both waitrose and puma?

one would assume that now we are that bit more desirable, a sponsor will have to find a few extra bob to get their name around the ground and on the shirt etc.

i wonder also if stadium naming rights could be up for grabs somewhere in the future. i'm sure john madejski would frown upon it (don't you know who i am?), but if it brings in more money then it should be considered. it's not like it's elm park, a sacred name. it's the madejski stadium, sacred probably to only one person and a few loyal followers, but to the rest a name is a name?

frankly, after what hes done for this club its the least he deserves,
surely selling his share of the club goes aginst the view that he was only in it for the recognition, publicity and kudos of owning a footbal club.
you were all saying he would never sell because of the aforementioned, how is it possible you can still be saying so?

He has been asked to stay on as chairman and become life president, nothing will be happening with the name of the stadium!

If they do change the name it will be "insert sponsors name" madjeski stadium, it wont be a complete change.

i've never said such, in fact i'm a dreamer myself and have always hoped one day we would be one of those clubs. i have great respect for john madejski and what he has done here. i've been here supporting this club since before he arrived, and will be here long after these investors leave as well. however, it is only a name, and if there is money to be made from stadium rebranding then it is foolish not to consider it.

He added: "Reading Football Club is one of the few football clubs with a strong financial balance sheet in terms of no debts, it has a modern stadium it has a very strong supporter base and it is ideally positioned, it really belongs in the Premier League and we have to get it back there, which of course will take time. Who knows when that can happen.

Mr Samuleson promised investment for the academy and scouting network, and said TSI would also look to expand the Madejski Stadium, which he added could be included in a naming rights deal.

does anyone know how long puma and waitrose have left on their sponsorship deals?

Pretty sure Puma extended their deal beyond this season.

Waitrose extending their deal - runs until end of 2012/13 season.

New owner's won't necessarily make RFC a more attractive proposition for sponsorship. The Premier League (and TV coverage) does.

Not sure re: Puma, but bearing in mind adidas have just ditched Liverpool one shouldn't take a decent kit manufacturer for granted!

Are you suggesting Puma are decent? I think that's stretching it somewhat. The quality of their shirts is pretty shabby, and the designs haven't been all that either.

I would also argue that the new investors do make a slight difference. Suddenly this average Championship club has been propelled into the limelight. Our stock is rising. Marketing wise I would argue it makes us more attractive to a potential sponsor.

Yes it does make us bit more attractive, but sponsorship is a market value driven business. No sponsor is going to pay more than a certain amount to be on a Championship team's shirt. What may change is that you put in clauses into the contract for promotion to the Prem (which may now be more likely) but the value of the shirt for a season in the Championship doesn't change (c.£100-500k per annum).

As for Puma, yes they have been a bit uninspired (especially compared to some of the kits they create for the African teams), but they're a pretty decent football brand.

But they were ditched as they wanted them to match the new deal they got offered - by some US firm - which I'm sure I heard is worth £25m a season for five years. however I am presuming I heard wrong and it's 5m a season for 5 years.

Don't think JM would want his name retained if Nobo won sponsorship rights...

True, ditched probably wasn't fair, but the point being we could do a lot worse than Puma.

Warrior's deal is £25m a year. Sounds a lot but the aim is to make it back with replica kit sales (Livepool are no.4 globally in number of sales - nearly 1m a year), and increased brand awareness in new markets (e.g. SE Asia).

Despite the fact it wasn't his idea, I'm sure I spotted a reaction from the named person when Samuelson didn't rule out the possibility of a name change at some time in the future - it being a commercial decision.

Hopefully there will be a bidding war at some time in the future.

On the kit front, I have to say that the quality of Burrda stuff is really good. What's more they are Swiss based!

But it would be more prudent to call it the "Poundstretcher Madejski Stadium". It's the Reading Way.
