Great news that we've got him to stay, not only because of the fact he's turning into a very good manager (and nice guy) but also because of the implication that has on the future of the club under Anton and TSI's ownership. It sounds like things are on track and, more importantly, that McDermott (as well as Madejski) is comfortable that they're the right kind of people to work with and run the club.
Before getting too carried away with it all, I think there are a few downsides/warnings to the way this was done.
- It seems pretty obvious to me that McDermott had concerns and, despite what Madejski may say, had some contact with Wolves which means he was interested in the job (partly depending on the way things would pan out here)
- As much as I like McDermott and think he's a pretty straight talking and honest bloke, he's still spinning us some BS along the way here.
- He may 'love the fans' but that didn't stop him or the club keeping us a little informed through all this, which, although some might think was a great PR move, I think was a bit unncessary.
- Interesting that he said this morning that he'd probably have left if it wasn't for the change in regime, so he from that I read that his love for the club, the fans and 'the Reading way' isn't all that great
- The clubs good work isn't going unnoticed as it's clear that Wolves saw McDermott as a good candidate and no doubt they won't be the first. Same goes for some of our players I guess.
- Ultimately this should be a reminder that you can't really believe the majority of the rubbish that gets spouted around the place where football is concerned, from Chairman, Managers, local hacks and pretty much they're all in it for themselves, apart from of course us fans
Although it's a good final outcome, I think it's been a bit unsettling all round. Hopefully they'll now use it as a springboard for a strong finish to the season, not an excuse to falter from this position of strength.
