PieEater tbf Blackburn did actually win the league title, so from that point of view they are a relatively big club to get relegated.

FiNeRaIn Yep, blame media, internet and the fact that idiots opinions are plastered everywhere these days.
The majority of this country has no clue what football is about. Its nothing to do with the history of the clubs, its to do with the quality of the teams playing. If you are s**t you go down, if you are good...you profit.
Im sick of hearing this plastic club, no history, big spenders nonsense. Not just about my club, or the likes wigan or whoever but as a whole, its pathetic and annoying. At some point in time those "big" clubs were successful and attracted fans..they weren't born successful and big, what these fans are now saying is that we've missed that cut-off point and we aren't allowed to be successful as we don't have a history in it - even though we are older than all of them. This really is their logic. When you break it down the majority football fans really are utter, utter retards. People give the americans stick about their sports...but you don't get nearly the idiocy and stupid stereotypes like this at all. The game is played in the present, you don't pick up bonus points because you have more fans and you won a trophy in the 70's.

Big deal
they had a benefactor who spent a fortune to win them the league.
he passed away in 2000 and it has been downhill ever since
they continued to spend despite no longer having his money, until recently they have been budgeting based on finishing in the top half of the league

Rev Algenon Stickleback H "Historic" clubs are always thought of as being bigger than they are.
Most people would regard Burnley and Preston as being bigger than Reading, for example, despite their crap crowds.
There's also the strange nostalgia-ridden belief that somehow those old giants of the black & white era are more deserving of success than clubs who've never had it.
It's not just at the top either. Look at Accrington Stanley. Failed once because of feeble support, yet people love the fact that they are back, despite getting feeble support again. What makes them more "deserving" of a league place than someone like Crawley?

Yes, but some seem to view them as upstarts who don't deserve to be there because their success is "new".

handbags_harris I'm not sure it's necessarily that with Crawley - it's the fact they are bankrolled and have (until recently) had a convicted fraudster and utter utter c*nt in charge of them.
