Premier League - 20 Seasons

by Blue Hooped Moose » 17 Apr 2012 12:54

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/20-seasons.html

http://www.premierleague.com The 2011/12 season is the twentieth of the Premier League. To celebrate this, we are organising 20 Seasons Awards and want supporters to have their say on what they think have been the outstanding moments of football over the last two decades.

Anyone looked at any of the nominations? The top goals (BBC Link) are pretty standard fare with no real surprises; not sure Yeboah's deserves a mention (no racisto) whilst the Cantona one just gets better and better every time you see it. Beckham's one (regardless of your opinion of him as a person) is also special; I remember hearing about it at a Reading game and the buzz filtering around the ground about "some young kid who'd just scored a worldy"

Not sure about some of the chosen "Best games" though - Pompey vs Reading gets in there, probably only because it's the highest scoring game in Prem history and I'm really not sure why the Man 8 - Arsenal 2 game gets a mention. Shocking result yes, but best game? Surely not...

Can't believe they've got Rooney shinning one in vs Man City in there.

Doesn't the whole world agree that the Liverpool v Newcastle 4-3 is the best prem game ever and the next best is errrr the other one?

Massive LOLz @ putting in the 2 from this season and the absolute shambles of a game that was our 7-4 defeat to the tax dodgers

As for the goals, all predictable but for a good reason, they're all skillz, apart probably from Beckham hitting a dead ball over a demoralised keeper, which will prolly win if it's a public vote

The Spurs 6-4 game was a much better game - we were in front three times and the game swung to and fro until it got to 4-4, before we got cheated out of it by Defoe's encroaching pen rebound.

We were only in the Pompey game once at 2-2 and were thoroughly whipped.

The Liverpool-Newcastle 4-3 will get it though.

Can't see past Di Canio for the best goal.

Agree with the original post that Beckham's goal oddly doesn't seem to get as much credit as it deserves. Perhaps a lot to do with his ensuing fame (and for a few years after 1998, infamy), but the buzz around the goal at the time was huge, and it really was clean and accurate strike. The only goal I can really think missing from that list is Dalian Atkinson's for Villa v Wimbledon in the first season of the Premier League - a great run and chip.

Can't see anything else winning Best Game but Liverpool v Newcastle, particularly considering the importance it played in the title race. Surprised none of the Reading v Watford games didn't get a mention though.

Best season has to be 1995/96 - great title race between Man Utd v Newcastle, including a cracking game between the two at St James Park where Schmeichel played a blinder and they won 1-0...a season that included THAT Liverpool v Newcastle game, the introductions of Dennis Bergkamp, David Ginola and Juninho, the return of Eric Cantona after his ban, Glenn Hoddle leaving Chelsea for England to be replaced by Ruud Gullit as player manager, and a certain post-match rant from Kevin Keegan...

Anyone see they showed Pompey v Reading (the 7-4) game on ESPN classic last week?

Picking the best XI is bloody tough.

Gone for

Schmeichel

G Neville
Bruce
Adams
A Cole

Beckham
Le tissier
Scholes
Giggs

Shearer
Cantona

but you could make a case for a completely different XI to be honest. Strikers, centre midfielders are a nightmare to pick.

Beckham's goal has been done hundreds of times across football. It's only in there because it's Beckham. Check out Mark Hudson (or whoever it was) who did it only last night.

Best prem goal ever isn't on the list - Tony Yeboah v Wimbledon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBBnKu5bnCE

After that i'd say Bergkamp v Newcastle - insane move

Loved both Yeboah volz. My favourite is still Le Tissier's v Newcastle. Cya, Cya and err Cya.

Best save is Gordon's, although Kusczack's v Wigan was genius.

Celebration is either Cantona's arrogant hands up but my favourite is Fergie and Brian Kidd going mental.

I called it at the time but Kuszczak's from the deflection is unreal. People shouldn't be able to change their body position like that.

Torn between those 2 saves myself. Thought Klinsmann's was the best celebration until I was reminded of Ketsbaia - nutter! Bergkamp best goal.

Only because he was captain and pretty much permanent regular for Man United when I watched them dominate the league in the early 90s. He isn't the best player on the CB list but I found it hard to pick another one for longevity that matched Bruce and his contribution to the cause. Sol Campbell was probably my 2nd choice. I thought Jaap Stam was as good a centre back as I've seen but can you put him in for 1 or 2 seasons? Rio maybe, Carragher maybe. Like I said other than 1 or 2 you could name 9 others and it would be a valid side.

Desailly was a more complete footballer than most of the ones you list IMHO.

I also went Shearer and Henry - would rather have those two in my side that Cantona

Yeah great save but I still have no idea how Gordon gets it up and over the bar from there. Insane
