Southampton v West Ham - play off?

by Dave the rave » 24 Apr 2012 11:55

I understand if Saints and Hammers end level on points and GD then they have a one off playoff.
Will it be held at Wembley?

When did this idea come in? Ithought it was games won against.

What would have happened if all three of us ended equal?
We could have broken our own record and lost 2 playoffs in one season!

Does it not go down to head to head?

A 3-0 win for West Ham and a 1-1 draw for Soton would leave everything level. Bit bizarre that that could happen after 46 games.

Southampton would go up as their head to head is better - which counts before a play off

Quite want West Ham to miss out by one goal just so I can laugh at Nolan for his rubbish one on one attempt in the last couple of minutes last night.

As much as i'd like it, I can see Saints ripping up Coventry.. especially at St. Mary's.

Idk a couple of early goals for WHU and the nerves start to jangle at st marys, coventry putting in a dogged performance, pressure getting to saints with the clock ticking wondering if whu will get a 3rd or 4th, coventy score from a corner, etc

anything could happen.

On the other hand Lambert could turn up with his 10 "team mates"

Another player may have scored a number had Lambert not been about so a bit tricky to judge.

Wouldn't it come down to goals scored if points and goal difference were level?

Failing that, do it on alphabetical order like they do before the season starts.

I thought positions were decided as:

Points
GD
Goals scored
Head to Head
1 off deciding game at a neutral venue

on that basis, and with Saints having a better head to head record, there is no set of circumstances where a deciding game will happen.

If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the season and the championship, a promotion place, play-off place or relegation place is at stake they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.
If two or more teams are level before the end of the season on points, goal difference and goals scored, then alphabetical order will determine the team finishing higher.

Nope, it's as Mr A wrote.

The Football League Regulations 9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground.

D'Urso is appointed referee for Southampton-Coventry, a match in which the home side is expected to trounce the away team.
Coventry take a shock early lead but Southampton are level within minutes.
Just before half-time Rickie Lambert battles for possession with a Coventry defender who goes down clutching his face, Lambert pleads innocence but D'Urso wields a red card.
Despite this Southampton take an early lead in the second half.
Coventry then pile the pressure on as Southampton sit back, and score from a poorly defended corner.
The match finishes 2-2.

Not quite - regulation 9.2 - it's head to head before a play-off

I'm starting to rescind on my dislike of West Ham now because if they go up it's a far easier away day for me.
