Z175 I think the problem with Rhodes is the huge fee he will command. Thus making it a big risk.

Le Fondre was easy, in that you can make the arguments about stepping up for a few 100k, and while that was also up two divisions, I think the Championship is closer to League Two than the Premier League is to League One.

We know League One very well - Martin Butler and Jamie Cureton didn't quite get as many as Rhodes has, but they weren't far off. Would anyone have thought they'd be Premier League players the following season? Frankly Cureton might have been had he got a chance like Danny Graham did. But you just don't know - and you can't pay £5m for that.

Unless you have been a Chief Scout for a decade and watched more football matches than anyone else put together...

But from my armchair, for a similar price, I'd go with the guy at his peak and with a stellar record, who you absolutely know will give everything not to let you down.

My take from the times I have seen him on TV is that he will make the step up. He is a big lad, has a lot of skill and looks like he can improve. Personally I think this could be 5M well spent if we have that much available.

Would be very happy to see Doyler back!

With him and Rhodes we can loan Church out and won't have to rely on Roberts who may find it hard in the prem.

If Shane Long was only worth £4.5 Millon when he left us for WBA
then Doyle now is worth 2-3 Million as Shane was young and had a decent
re-sale value, whereas Kevin, in 3 years may be looking towards retirement.

Shane also comes out better in minutes per goal in Prem and Championship
and (surprisingly) comes out better on Championship assists.

080 Starts 06 Sub 07,100 Minutes 36 Goals 15 Assists 197 Mins per Goal Championship DOYLE
079 Starts 44 Sub 07,545 Minutes 39 Goals 26 Assists 193 Mins per Goal Championship LONG

144 Starts 17 Sub 12,926 Minutes 37 Goals 20 Assists 349 Mins per Goal Premiership DOYLE
040 Starts 42 Sub 03,791 Minutes 13 Goals 04 Assists 277 Mins per Goal Premiership LONG

Across all games, Championship, Premiership, FA Cup, League Cup, Play-Offs and Internationals Long is 222 Minutes/Goal and Doyle is 277 Minutes/Goal

If you extrapolate Long's minutes in the Prem up to Doyle's at Long's current scoring rate he would be on 46 Goals compared to Doyle's 37 and his career average would be 242 mins/goal

I think Shanes played far easier games though ...not that this was about him SB! Clearly we would be sensible to take him ahead of KD for youth and resale value, but sadly that's why he's not up for sale?

31 years and LOOKING TOWARDS RETIREMENT is what I said

ie No longer of the age where we could be looking for a good pay-off

(Born 18 September 1983) so he'll be 29 soon after the start of the next season

Three year contract would get him to 32

And just to remind you, great player, worth having on the books, just not at 5 Million

I used SL-KD to underline why I thought the mooted 5M for KD was too high

In three years, Kevin Doyle may be thinking about retiring, in three years.

What a startling contribution. In 5 years, Shane Long may be thinking about retiring, in 5 years.

Of course, no player in their early 30s has ever had a big transfer fee. We can only think about selling a player 3 years after we sign him. We have to sell every player we buy for a profit.

I'm taking the piss... and giving the sentence symmetry, he's not likely to retire just turning 32... 35 is more realistic.

You are such a dull twat.

Doyle MIGHT play until he's 36, though I seriously doubt it.

The point is up and coming young players command higher fees because

(a) They can still improve.

(b) If they improve they can be sold at a profit.

That's the case with Long, who actually matches Doyle or betters him on goals/minutes.

But Doyle, much as I love him, has been getting a worse and worse goal return.

Goals-wise, he had ONE good Premiership Season (his first) and since then has
got 24 Goals in 4 Seasons playing 10,452 Minutes @ 436 Minutes per Goal

ie Pretty much a Goal every 5 full games

First Premiership Stay

2,474 Minutes 13 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 190 Minutes 2006-07
3,018 Minutes 06 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 503 Minutes 2007-08

5,492 Minutes 19 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 289 Minutes Combined
==================================================

Second Premiership Stay

2,895 Minutes 09 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 321 Minutes 2009-10
2,190 Minutes 05 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 438 Minutes 2010-11
2,349 Minutes 04 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 586 Minutes 2011-12

7,434 Minutes 18 Goals @ 1 Goal Every 413 Minutes Combined, a Goal every 4.5 Games over 3 Seasons

Sure KD does other stuff well, and MAYBE McD can rejuvenate him, but the stats make
it look a bit like he will struggle to get significant goals in the Premiership, but, more
importantly, that he COULD BE past his best.

I LIKE KD, and if the price is right, he's another "good worker" for some star to get goals off
but I don't see how he can be worth 5 Million
