How utterly galling for Blatter and the rest of the anti-English FIFA international Committee, that an English team dare win a penalty shoot-out; so much so, that Blatter is now asking for an alternative to be found.....and is asking the President of Bayern Munich to investigate!

I think both teams should be punished and some other skank takes their place. Highest scoring 'loser' get's a golden ticket through to the next round when two teams draw.

More seriously, for extra time you have to sub your keeper for a dwarf.

Nothing wrong with the shoot-out, but if a more footballing answer is craved, then surely it's back to the Golden Goal first goal in extra time wins it, but with no time limit this time - play 15 minute periods until someone scores, allowing 1 extra substitute. Without wishing to invite vitriol from the anti-USA brigade, it does perfectly well in American football and rarely, if ever, results in more than 15 minutes extra play. Yes, it may lend itself to the cagey standoffs as no-one wants to lose, but if there is no time-limit or penalty shootout to fall back on, someone will have to be brave.

And if the TV companies moan it will play havoc with their schedules, fcuk 'em.

My idea, which I have gone so far as emailing the FA, UEFA and FIFA with before is

a dead ball shoot out within the arc of the box.

Player puts ball anywhere they like within arc, keeper remains on line like with pens, player has 1 kick.

Much more exciting than pens imo
more skill required
emphasis much more on keeper to save

Love penalties, but I think its fair to say that a pinball type multi ball situation would no doubt be an effective and popular means of settling things.
