How utterly galling for Blatter and the rest of the anti-English FIFA international Committee, that an English team dare win a penalty shoot-out; so much so, that Blatter is now asking for an alternative to be found.....and is asking the President of Bayern Munich to investigate!

Where was he asking for an alternative after England lost on pens in 1990, or 1996, or 1998, or 2004?

Tosser.

Agreed. Not to mention the lack of complaint about taking advantage of goal-keeping errors after England lost in 2002 and the repeated failure to ban metatarsal injuries.

Has anyone ever demonstrated such utter contempt for the English as Sepp, so-called, Blatter?

all a bit too subtle I think

TBM blindfold the players (bar the keeper) and then put a bell in the ball

be oxf*rd chaos when they signal for last orders...

On the plus side they might all kick that tw@t with the bell at Pompey's head in.

Award the win to the team with the most goals scored to date in the tournament - That may encourage attacking football at all times right up to the final.

Only flaw might be a German v Austria final group game in which both teams have already qualified finishing in a 20-20 draw.

Why immediately see this as anti-English?

Timing.

Each team has to don mascot costumes and play the game like one big It's A Knockout event

WAGs take the place of their partners and continue the game

Of course, one way to do it might be to encourage good behaviour by saying when the teams reach extra time they lose all their players who were booked during the game (if a booked player has been substituted then they have to lose another player of their choice).

If you draw, neither team goes through to the next round.

Not a bad shout, though the team going into the knockout with the better GS, might play for a draw.

I think both teams should be punished and some other skank takes their place. Highest scoring 'loser' get's a golden ticket through to the next round when two teams draw.

Kinda combined both our ideas into a mega-idea.

I'm a big fan of the chaos that would cause.

Especially in a final - sorry Chelsea and Bayern you haven't proven good enough to win the trophy so we'll hold it over to next season and you can try for it again.

For international tournaments the chairman from each country has to hand Blatter a sealed paper bag of cash before each game. In the event of a draw after extra time the cash is counted and the biggest bribe wins. Its a system FIFA already implement for most important decisions so easy to push out to matches too.

More seriously, for extra time you have to sub your keeper for a dwarf.

Nothing wrong with the shoot-out, but if a more footballing answer is craved, then surely it's back to the Golden Goal first goal in extra time wins it, but with no time limit this time - play 15 minute periods until someone scores, allowing 1 extra substitute. Without wishing to invite vitriol from the anti-USA brigade, it does perfectly well in American football and rarely, if ever, results in more than 15 minutes extra play. Yes, it may lend itself to the cagey standoffs as no-one wants to lose, but if there is no time-limit or penalty shootout to fall back on, someone will have to be brave.

And if the TV companies moan it will play havoc with their schedules, fcuk 'em.

blindedbythelights My idea, which I have gone so far as emailing the FA, UEFA and FIFA with before is

a dead ball shoot out within the arc of the box.

Player puts ball anywhere they like within arc, keeper remains on line like with pens, player has 1 kick.

Much more exciting than pens imo
more skill required
emphasis much more on keeper to save

So basically exactly the same as a penalty shoot-out only with the ball moved further away?

Love penalties, but I think its fair to say that a pinball type multi ball situation would no doubt be an effective and popular means of settling things.

When the time runs out, which ever teams half the ball is in, loses.
