Back in the olden days at Prep School, we used to play that whichever team had the most corners at the end of the game won.

This seems like a fairly sensible way of doing it. (obviously can't base it on shots as teams would start shooting from all over the place)

World Cup final won because a linesman didn't notice that a keeper got a touch and gave a goal kick, that'll end well

As opposed to a knock-out match being won because a linesman didn't notice a shot bounce of the crossbar and quite clearly go over the line...

Tokyo Sex Whale What about a 1 on 2 - attacker dribbles the ball from the half way line and has 15 seconds to score past a defender and goalkeeper..

This, but with just the keeper.

Dont really see what wrong with pens. Its part of the game in normal time, many a league game is decided by a penalty being saved or scored.

Only other realistic alternative would be having shots from the edge of the box making it more likely to be decided by a good shot rather than a miss.

Extended-Phenotype If you draw, neither team goes through to the next round.

Couple that with the golden goal.

Have the penalty shoot out after 90 mins and then play extra time. The shoot out result only counts if it's still a draw. Ensures at least one side attacks in extra time, makes the shoot out slightly less pressured and takes a bit of the stigma out of missing the crucial one as there's 30 mins for everyone else to do something about it

If you can't sort a football match out after 2 hours then there is no hope. Penalties all the way.

surely the answer is to have the penalty shoot out before the start of the match in case it cannot be decieded via full and extra time?

Agreed, and the team who lost the shoot out wouldn't have the legs to break down a team playing 11 men behind the ball
