Greatwesternline
YateleyRoyal Why is this on the Team board?

I posed a question about our 2nd choice keeper not being in the England squad.

This forum is so tiresome for categorising of posts.

Anyone would think it was serious and stuff, but no, it's just a forum, for killing time whilst at work.

Why people have to drag seriousness, regimented rules and pedantry into their social life i will never know.

The less clutter to read through, the better. You know there's a reason for those rules, STFUOGO!

BTW, Rob Green, how is he in the England squad? We scored 7 past him and he's still in! He did ok last night though, but honestly didn't have much to deal with!

I think the real issue is that it is implying that there are no decent England goalkeepers in the Premiership bar Hart and Ruddy.

On that basis, McCarthy could be worth an absolute fortune in a couple of Years!

Foster and Robinson are both pretty decent keepers, and probably as good as the likes of Woods or Martyn were when they were long term understudy's to the outstanding English keepers of their days.

The influx of foreign keepers over the last 10-15 years probably means that our good prospects don't get the chance to play and learn at the highest level in the way they used to (or seemed to) and so if they don't stand out like Hart or Robinson they get bombed out a little more quickly than in the past.

Only tenuously related, but talking of strength in depth, saw De Gea missed out on the Spain squad completely for Euro 2012. Not bad for a 4th choice is he? Casillas, Valdes and Reina in ahead of him.

Indeed, and interesting that neither Valdes or Reina appear to have backed out of playing for their country despite not getting much of a look in with Casillas established as the long term number 1.

Maybe they actually see it as an honour to be selected in the squad for the national team rather than throwing hissy fits because they’re not regular starters.

Absolutely, it's one of my biggest bug bears with this generation fo players that we now see players 'retiring from international football'.

As much as I'm not his biggest fan, and the cynic in me questions his motives at times, I've got a lot of respect for Beckham for never walking away in the way Shearer, Scholes, Carragher and others have done. I don't remember previous generations doing this by the way, although I think Lineker did didn't he?

I wouldn't mind so much if it was a personal thing with a manager and a player just said I'm not prepared to play for Manager X, but to just say I can't be arsed to play for my country anymore sums up a lot about the mentality of modern day footballers.

Agree HB. There’s certainly not the disruption or additional effort involved in playing for your country that you find in, say, cricket, where ageing players might retire from one form of the game in order to genuinely prolong their career in another.

It’s a strange mentality not to want to play for your country, have to suppose that Gary Neville’s comments about the heavy spotlight some England players fell under have some significance to them.

I'm sure the success, or potential for it, has played a big part in Spain resolving the issues in their camp and keeping the likes of those two happy to come along for the ride.

I'd just like to think our players had a sense of pride and duty over representing our country, whether that's in the starting eleven or just as a valuable squad player. It doesn't seem that's the case these days and I don't remember it really being that way in the past when players would want to be involved (could well be wrong on that though).

I don't remember Hoddle or the like quiting when they were overlooked or under used. It just seems a modern thing, no doubt influenced by the money and exposure on offer at club level.
