Former Player Celebrations

by E. Andrew » 19 Sep 2012 15:03

Shane Long:

I won’t celebrate out of respect if I do score. Reading have done a lot for my career and I wouldn’t ever do that.

Would you say this is 'expected' from strikers/all players? I like the gesture, despite it's trivial nature. There's obviously loads of examples, but take Henry; I always respected how he'd respond to previous return-to-EPL rumors claiming he wouldn't play against Arsenal, etc.

It's all very nice and that, but unnecessary in my view.

There are obviously cases where players like Henry become synonymous with one club for the length of time they are there, or what they achieve (can you imagine Giggs celebrating a goal against United? could he even?) - but whilst the sentiment is nice, there's no need for it in Long's case, imho.

Yeah this, basically ^^

He's not a Reading player anymore - if he wanted to show respect then he would have turned down the move to West Brom and stayed with us

Leroy Lita was the worst - ran off celebrating like a mental then did the whole Tevez apolgy thing to the East Stand who then applauded him :|

Should've booed your heads off

I fully expect ex-players to celebrate if they score against us, don't see it being an issue. Credit to those players that don't celebrate goals against old clubs as they would do normally e.g. Denis Law (ManC v ManU), Gary McAlister (Liverpool v Coventry) etc.

Just hope Shane doesn't get a chance to score....!

Was that the back heel that sent Utd down?

Yes,one of my heroes.
I'm in the "Why not celebrate because that other club either didn't want you or got a lot of money for you." camp.

I thought I'd have another look at the Law goal, one of my earliest football memories. Very cheeky.

Though it does appear that it made no difference to Utd's chances of staying up that season as other results went against them.

One of my most hated things (among many) in football. In 99% of cases it is nothing more than trying to be popular, just a shame it happens so much now that not doing it makes people
Think you are a c***

Craig Bellamy must struggle to celebrate any goal with all the clubs he has been at

Shane Long: "I won't celebrate..."

by Royal Ginger » 21 Sep 2012 16:18

Shane Long has been very respectful ahead of his current club's clash with his former club.

A touch of class from a player who clearly still feels some kind of kinship with the club.

Well hopefully he will not have opportunity to celebrate whether he wants to or not...

I'd be happy for him to celebrate, what I'd like is for him to avoid going down in the box like a cheap French hooker at the slightest contact from our defenders.

Not entirely comfortable with this.

Surely as a sportsman he would want to celebrate any goals. It would be a bit OTT to give it the big 'un Adebayor style, but as long as it's not deliberately at former fan bases it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Thoughtful gesture mind you.

He is basically a Reading fan, he loves the club, the players and the staff.

I certainly wouldn't celebrate if I scored against Reading.

Really?

I'd become affiliated to my team mates and the fans paying my wages for sure, even if still a fan. He's clearly enjoying life at WBA, I wouldn't be offended if he celebrated.

I celebrate when I beat Reading on FM. One game I built them up to be double Champions League winners, left and managed to topple them with AC Milan. I was delighted with myself (a little off topic).
