Which ground are you ticking off next?

by St Pauli » 01 Oct 2012 21:10

Due to German paranoia about how they're viewed internationally I'm on a free course for 6 days to Germany in a few weeks time, and will be taking in a few grounds whilst I'm there, taking in 3 clubs and 3 leagues.

Feast your eyes on these:

The German national stadium/Olympic stadium in Berlin and home to Hertha BSC Berlin. I've actually already been to this ground but not for a game so it doesn't count.

ESPRIT Arena (Fortuna Dusseldorf) I've seen them play before, but in a completely temporary stadium that still held about 20,000 that only lasted 6 games.

The Karl Liebnecht* Stadium in Potsdam watching SV Babelsberg.

*German Communist killed in 1919.

Had a quick look at St Pauli's ground at the weekend. They were away getting stuffed at Regensburg so doesn't really count and it's being rebuilt in part at the mo so only had 2 stands.

Probably be going out to Frankfurt before the end of the yea for a few days so will look to tie it in with an Eintract game whilst there.

I don't really "tick off" grounds tbh. I go to them if there's something happening there I want to see.

When that will next happen I do not know.

Cologne's ground is the only German Ground I've been to and it's gr8. Doesn't look much from the outside, but 2 tiered all the way around and a cracking atmosphere. Plus, lots of bars inside and outside the ground.

Planning on doing another German trip in the new year - perhaps Berlin or Dortmund.

^ I like it! The more I hear about German football the more it appeals to me. Would love to spend an afternoon on the terraces there with a pint of crisp German lager.

Would like to visit the Olympic stadium myself. Been to 6 stadiums over there with my German mate, they are mostly pretty good as you would expect. I always enjoy being allowed to drink a beer while sitting/standing and watching the matches.

The Berlin derby, Hertha vs FC Union would be the ultimate game now that Hertha are back in Bundesliga 2. I'm sure there was a 75,000 attendance a couple of years back when they last met - must be close to being a record for a 2nd tier game. Also, I think Potsdam (or was it Paderborn just can't remember) was where the refereeing match fixing scandal of a few years back was centred around. Mind you, Potsdam is close to Berlin so should be easy to reach.

Have a good time.

I've been to Union v Dresden which was very heavily policed. No alcohol at the game for fears of trouble but we did get a shout out over the tannoy which was nice.

35 degree heat and they hosed down the crowds on the terraces at half time which was pleasant although a little reminiscent of Schindler's List.

maybe none :|

Probably do Newcastle away in Jan, but already done that one. Lux v Israel next week in the WC is pretty exotic, but that is just a new country to tick off for me.

I've been to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, loved celebrating JT's late winner vs der Krauts in the Germany end in 2008

Only German ground ive been to was Munich's old Olympic Stadium. Although it was to see England beat Germany 5-1 so cant really grumble at that.

Next new ground will be Didcot Town on Saturday in the FA Cup. I used to "tick off" league grounds but most are new builds now. ie, just not worth the effort unless they happen to play Reading.

Whilst the new ground is great because of it's size, design and location, it's been mired in controversy. The strip club in one of the executive boxes was successfully campaigned against in the last couple of years, and the organised fanscene is now targetting the % allocated to terraces/seating and the planned police center in the new main stand, proposing that it be replaced with a club museum.
