NTRoyal Maguire NTRoyal The Irish fought in....WW2
Yeah, for the Germans.
Yes a small number of Repulican tools sided with the Nazi's. However, as far as I am aware plenty of Irish signed up to fight against them.
Over 50,000 went directly against their Governments wishes and signed for the allies. When they returned home they were effectively barred from holding any government sanctioned post for 10 years (that includes anything from Civil servants to teachers and road diggers) and were denied any sort of welfare for their families.
It was nothing short of a national outrage which is only now being recognised by the Irish Governmnet as there is a movement for the Government to apologise for this.
It was good to see Frank Feighan wear the poppy in the Dial after it being banned for 16 years. Some have suggested changing the colour to white for Ireland but I always through that was the colour of cowardice.
Anyway - James McClean is a Derryman who turned his back on Northern Ireland to play for the Republic. It doesn't surprise me.
