Programme sellers

by peterroyal76 » 21 Nov 2012 17:34

I always buy my programme from the same seller each game. You may know him, he was an older guy with glasses who had been doing the job for years and was at the top of the hill behind B&Q.
However he wasn't there this week so I asked the other guy where he was (thinking he may have been ill), only to be told that he had quit because the club had decided to charge them £15 for their match ticket.

Do they really need the £15 that badly?
Were they expected to pay anything before? I'm sure I remember something like this happening before.

At some point in the past, possibly up until this season, they were allowed to watch the game for free after the game had kicked off and they'd done their selling pitch. Considering they'll be on a naff hourly wage, I wouldn't stand there for a two hours before a game either if I didn't get the perk of watching the match after. It's probably the equivalent of more than half their wage for those 2/3 hours.

I expect the club would rather make money on each ticket, than sell it for half price or whatever, especially now Viagogo are involved.

This very much looks to be a case of the club preaching one set of values and practising a very different one.

Another case of business managers at this level of football seeming to know the price of everything and the value of very little.

They had a phone in about this the other week on BBCRB but I'm not sure if they contacted the club & asked why. A few sellers were on there rightly moaning about it. I think it's absolutely disgusting & completely wrong.

Charged last time they were in the Prem, certainly the Golden Gamble sellers had to pay. Free tickets were reinstated when we were relegated.

Another joy of being in the Premier League.

Have to say that to get a premier ticket for working two hours equates to almost £20 per hour, assuming £36-£40 for a ticket. Thats more than most people earn. I can quite see why the club have done it.

Players and management (business management too?) get pay rises for being in the PL, support staff get benefits cut!

My mate used to sell programmes at Molineux, and he would be get 10p a programme for selling them, rather than an hourly fee, in addition to a free match ticket. I presume the RFC sellers would be paid in the same way?

Not such a bad thing is it?

I mean people can buy tickets if they want to so badly, leave jobs like that to those that desperately need the extra few quid... £15 is still a discount on the match ticket...

I will use this saying today. I like it.

Some ships don't have enough lifeboats.
