These supposed riches of the EPL

by weybridgewanderer » 02 Dec 2012 08:45

Premier League clubs made more than £150m profit yet paid less than £3m in corporation tax, according to analysis of their most recent accounts. This is an effective tax rate of 2 per cent. Equally startling is that a profit of £150m made by eight clubs is all that the Premier League has to show for a turnover of about £2.2bn a year.

It would actually make perfect sense for a football club to make zero profit over an extended period of time - any money made is put back into squad, stadium or other infrastructure. However, yeah, that don't happen.

football has never been run with making profits as the aim, so it's hardly a shocking revelation

Most likely the profit made recently serves only to reduce the previous losses - hence why no or little tax is payable.

Exactly. Given that almost all clubs run with losses year after year, most will never pay any tax especially if the minimum requirement in future is just to break even.
