c_u, If you bothered to read the article and understand it you'd know it wasn't a first team game. The three kids who have been arrested were 15 and 16, so I think at Dutch level that's U18's. Not only that, Dutch football at that level is infinitely better structured with mini-stadia for most clubs with parents of most of the players volunteering to help out. It is nothing like Sunday league football in this country where the games are mainly held on pot-holed, dogshit ridden public parks. It is a dedicated pastime with a lot more in the way of pride for how people perceive their respective clubs. If I had the choice of allowing my son to play for a Dutch youth club or an English, I'd choose Dutch every time.

Not sure who you are aiming that comment at HH but fully aware of what type of game. I was referring to the fact that it will not make a blind bit of difference to how local referees are perceived or treated in this country.

I don't understand the above post by Harris to be honest. It hasn't got anything to do with the article and what happened in Almere yesterday. It shouldn't happen in any country, at any age.

Feel sorry for the family and especially his son. RIP.

Aimed at creative_username to suggest that Dutch youth football isn't anything like Sunday park football is here. His implication is that football the world over is played by gobby 22 year old brickies who know it all and this was no different - well for a start it was youth football and then you have the structure of the clubs, all designed to instill a greater level of respect.

As it is, the club in question look like they're going to fold as a result of all of this, and have had issues in the past. They are a rare case in Holland though.

This was a kids game with a father running the line for his son's team, something I did for my son's team for several years in this country.
This was a pleasure until they reached the age of about 15 / 16 when it would frequently turn nasty. Who to blame? That could be a long debate but this incident is absolutely sickening. It is the sort of thing that could happen here just as easily as in Holland.

As someone who runs the line most weeks for my son's U17 team, this is an absolute tragedy and could have happened anywhere.

I've been shouted at by opposition fans (we always run the line by our own defence), but thankfully nothing has come to blows.

This team should be banned from playing football ever again.

They've martyred themselves by immediately withdrawing from the league this season. It's highly likely they'll not be around after it either.

Not sure there's much value in locking the stable door - this horse has bolted.

Full, moving account of what happened. Incredibly sad.
