I cannot believe all the away fans at Man City were sitting down. For god sake, their entire lower tier was standing!

Every time I watch a game of theirs on Sky every single away supporter is standing! Atmosphere is far better when everyone is standing, and if you don't like it - sit at the front...

But that brings the whole standing/seating argument back to its viewing roots.
When I was young I could navigate to the front of the terraces so that I could see - it didn't matter if someone tall came and stodd in front of me as I simply moved.
Now, you've got your seat and whether you can see or not is irrelevant - if someone stand in front of you so that you can't see, then you're buggered.
Now you could argue that all the little ones should go to the font seats, but the online ticket selection function seems to have been disabled at the moment.

So we're left with - "Sit down, 'cos the small ones behind you can't see"

It may have escaped your attention but when you buy a ticket it has a seat number allocated to it - moving is no longer an option (might be easier next season, though).

Anyway, while Rother's point is a bit undermined we all know that if someone in charge says that bloke in the back row can stand because he's in the back row all manner of bellends will decide that they should be allowed to stand too, because he's been allowed to

Clubs that do not enforce sitting are technically in breach of their safety certificate and therefore could find the authorities refuse to renew said certificate.

The sooner safe standing is brought in the better for everyone involved in the game

There's a bit more to this story than that particular picture tells.

Sunderland, like some other switched-on clubs, has introduced a "singing section" - which is a euphemism for a section where standing regulations will not be enforced. The unofficial arrangement is that in the areas concerned it'll be standing behind the line of the concourse, and sitting in front of it. You won't, of course, find this written down anywhere or officially stated, but it's a sensible, pragmatic solution to unenforceable ground regulations.

But as a result they are clamping down in people standing in other areas, but as yet not everyone understands what the situation is as it's all "unofficial". This seat belongs to someone who is in the "sitting area" and also refusing to move.

So while the way they've done it is crass, tacky and overly-sensationalist, I do have some sympathy for Sunderland in this case.
