Possession Stats

Why does there always seem to be such a contrast in the Possession Stats that are reported?

I would have thought they would have stats from OPTA of the football association but it seems that they are either trying to do there own guesstimate?

I always think the BBC give one side or other 15 minutes credit for half-time - it's the only way I can see that their figures are so far out.

Fairly sure Opta stats are based on number of passes rather than time of possession, don't know what BBC uses.

Yes, but that's a bit simplistic isn't it.

Yes in that iirc Liverpool have had 50 or 60 shots on goal more than United this season. If you can't fashion clear cut chances, or have the players to create their own, like United and Van Persie, then your team is obviously missing something.

But you cant score if you dont have the ball. All those criticising Barca after they failed to win the CL last season are a bit quieter now they've dropped only two league points in half a season, and lost just twice in six months.

It is a regularly used stat these days so there really should be a common way of producing the figures
I think BBC figures are least accurate and this game's numbers would confirm that.

You can score a goal with 1 simple hoof up field from the keeper - "having the ball" doesn't necessarily mean you create more chances.

Of course not. But that's like saying you don't need to swing the bat hard to hit a six in cricket, just try to top edge a bouncer.

Having the ball goes a hell of a long way to scoring goals. Obviously.
