retro_royal I can name two very good players who have both in the last 24 months turned down professional contracts and stayed at semi pro clubs as they earn more in their day jobs + its much secure. One is a school teacher who I doubt is making much more than £30k.
I know a good dozen or so players in the north west who play in the Blue Square Premier / Blue Square North / below and have rejected moves to full time teams in the BSBP/League 2 because they make more money in their respective day jobs with part time football on the side. Moving full time they would either drop salary by losing a job or the upheaval of moving, or extra time spent commuting just isn't worth it for them. That's why it's so difficult for a lot of BSBP teams to get players and many of the part time teams stuff their squads with players that are full time students.
The Southport manager works full time in a psychiatric hospital as well as managing 'port. He's been headhunted for several jobs bigger teams in the Blue Square Premier and League 2 plus a couple of opportunities in League 1 but doesn't want to leave the area or his full time role. The only job he came anywhere near to getting he would have considered leaving them for at the moment was Preston, which in the end went to Westley.
