Photos of old grounds

A photo article of some of the old grounds from the dim and distant past. Interesting to see how much they've used to look with huge terraces. Villa Park is particularly impressive/a health hazard!

Is there any sport that wasn't infinitely cooler in the 1960s and 1970s.

Thanks for the link, enjoyed.

Some absolutely brilliant stuff there. You can feel the atmosphere and theatre of it all. The modern stadium just doesn't do it.

1990 edition of Simon Inglis' "Football Grounds of Great Britain" arrived last night.

Some cracking shots and a great read. I also quite like the fact that it's outdated and describing these ramshackle wooden stands rather than concrete bowls.

Also, agree with 'Groundtastic', posts some amazing shots.

Good pics

Interesting to note the Stamford Bridge one, especially

This is a great series, Villa park especially looks stunning with that single, mass of humanity at one end.

Superb stuff! And I would definitely recommend Simon Inglis' 'The Football Grounds of Britain'

I've just taken in this place on my run round Brussels:

Stade les Trois Tilleuls

not an old ground as such but not really in use any more for serious football - it's massive, must've comefortably held upwards of 30,000 once

(checks Wikipedia)

held 40,000 and was home to Racing Club Bruxelles, now part of White Star Woluwe who play at a much smaller ground

One of the best sets of photos I've seen is by Stuart Roy Clarke - homesoffootball.co.uk

Some absolute beauties, particularly like the L.S. Lowryesque shot of one of the great old nostalgic stadiums in English football that was the Leeds Road Stadium of Huddersfield Town FC. It had a simply marvellous natural setting with the Pennines surrounding it. Like the shot of Springfield Park Wigan also, good example of lower league football in those old style grounds.
