11.30 from paddington
Sanguine Read a slightly damning article on Owen that, whilst praising is impact as a youngster, his contribution for England, and a consistent goal ratio, even at Madrid and United, also said that in his latter career, being a great finisher and doing not a lot else, he was a ‘prototype Adam Le Fondre’. Which is harsh on ALF, if maybe true.

If the latter part of Owen's career had been injury-free, it'd have been interesting to see if he was able to adapt his game and contribute more to the team (especially as his pace faded).

At his best, he was an extremely exciting player to watch. I remember the 2002 World Cup group game against Argentina. Having already been once-bitten in 1998, the Argentine defence seemed to crap themselves everytime Owen got the ball. Lovely dive for the penalty as well...

AK - I still don't understand the difference in treatment in regards to Owen and McManaman. McManaman just ran down his contract and went through the motions in his final year, but still doesn't seem to attract the same amount of stick as Owen (even before his signing for Man Utd).

I think Owen was just held in higher esteem when he was there so his leaving hurt their pride a bit more

You're wrong on this one Soggs. Owen was never held in the esteem of say Fowler even before he left. The suspicion was that he was always more interested in himself and possibly England than Liverpool. He was never that popular really. Damn good player as a kid though.

Great player, and up there with the likes of Lineker, Hurst and Paul Brayson as one of England's best strikers of all time.

Shame injury hampered him in his late 20's as I have no doubt he would have beaten Bobby Charlton's England Goal scoring record if he had stayed fit. Michael Owen at his peak was world class.

I hate to say it, but get the feeling things could have been different if he was managed a little better when he first burst onto the scene as a 17 yr old. It will be a long time until England have a striker of his quality again.

I find him annoying as a co commentator on BT Sport

He has an annoying shouty voice that seems to stay the same pitch constantly

The only thing that makes Michael Owen's irritating commentaries a bit more fun is to have a sweepstake on how many times he will say "I'll tell you what ..." during the game.

I'll tell you what, don't start below double figures.
