Muskrat
paultheroyal
akranes So, uh, to the people slating Adkins... who do you suggest be the next manager? Realistically?

Yep, question I'd like to see answered....

Lets hear it then Ideal and Muskrat for starters.

Not a question that even needs more than a second's consideration. We shouldn't have sacked Brian. Simple as, then you've automatically got a proven Championship winning manager for next year's campaign. How many Football League Championships has Adkins ever won (for the avoidance of doubt - that's the top division in the Football League)

So given we live in this reality and not some alternate universe where Brian wasn't sacked. Who would be a better choice than Adkins? Which was the question asked.

To use a currently popular HNA? phrase - "The silence is defening."

PS, how many promotions does he have compared to McDermott.

True :(

Perhaps I should stop reading articles like this one:

http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/sacked-adkins-had-greatest-win-loss-record-southampton-history-3759241

This man is like our very own Sir Steve breaking records.

Didn't he also break Sotons record of the number of consecutive wins? 7 I believe.

Literally can't wait for the announcement.

About as good appointment as we could have hoped for if all goes well. Any of those moaning about it and/or comparing him to McDermott need to have a look at themselves. Brian, rightly or wrongly, is history and looking forward this guy has the credentials to get us promoted next season...which was the basis of most people's arguments for keeping McDermott for next season.

Even though the odds are heavily against us, it even gives us a tiny little bit of hope for this season...something we haven't had all season except for that purple patch in January. Without hope, it is very depressing being being a fan of any club.

I think this appointment is a step in the right direction for the club.

This is my probably you see. I always think my best is when I'm being unpleasantly abusive in a sub-E-P style.

2 world wars, 1 world cup I'm shocked that anyone can be anti-Adkins.

Was stunned to see him bizarrely sacked and am delighted he's coming.

I didn't want Brian to be sacked, but he was - I move on.
I wanted Curbishley and didn't get him - boo hoo hoo.

But we have this lad and his record is VERY respectable. Curbishley aside, did we honestly a manager with a faultless Prem record to come down to the Championship and manage Reading?? I mean FFS what stupidity some of us are showing. This to me is a massive coup for us. There I was thinking this is a shambles of a situation but if this is pulled off I take that back and take my hat off to Anton, Sir John and Nicky H. Absolutely the best we could hope for and punching way above our weight too. Well done all at Reading if we pull this off!!

Funny how we differ. I thought we were right to rotate our manager because we needed to push on.
I really thought we would show our ambitions and what have the board done?

That's right made a right "Pigs Ear" of the situation. Firstly having no one in place, then going for the second choice. Wreaks of desperation to me.

Should have known better. Extremely disappointing.

Cant wait for the board to start spouting propaganda about going forward etc etc. To me its a step in reverse.

This. How many people would have swapped McD for NA at the start of the season???

Yeah, at the end of last season when we won the Champ, how many would have said fire McD, and make an approach to Adkins, because....that would be punching more above our weight and would take us to the next level? I guess if thats now the premise, we're largely basing it on his 4 months in the Prem with Soton.

Ideal Fact remains that "tactical genious" Adkins got outdone in the chump last year by McD, and they had a much better squad than us - what the hell is the point of appointing this clueless tactician, and calling it "taking us to the next level"? It's just oxf*rd rubbish, thoroughly underwhelming, and I feel like we've been murked.

A more recent fact is that, prior to his bizarre dismissal by Saints this season, Adkins had his team playing far more attractive football and getting better results than Brian McDermott was doing at Reading.

Agree totally. Any dick can come up with smart arse comments but harder to come up with a credible alternative.

I probably can't come up with an alternative tbh but, like our signings this season, it just seems a bit lazy.

Did a premier league team backed by a billionaire really spend two weeks searching the globe to find that the best two available managers were in Southampton and Brighton :?:

McDermott hadn't failed during his time at the club at that point. Had McDermott left for some other reason, I'd absolutely have suggested Adkins if he was available.

Still yet to see anyone offer a better plausible alternative.

That was the end of last season? Stop living in the past.

I'd prefer Adkins over Mcdermott in the present.

Mcdermott proved himself all season that he isn't a premiership manager. Adkins proved that he was more of a premiership manager, even if he did spend a lot of budget but at the end of the day when he got sacked they were 16th and we were 20th. If Mcdermott had that budget he would of bought a thousand Championship standard and lower league players. He was stuck in the "Reading Way". It was good enough to get into the Premiership but it's not enough to keep us up. If you want to see Reading progress than this is definitely the way forward. I loved Mcdermott but jeez move on!

Hoop Blah For many of those that go to games and pay good money to do so, the way we play is quite important.

Even for some of us who don't.

Reading are on the brink of naming Nigel Adkins as their new manager – and handing him more than £30million to begin a rebuilding job.

Those papers love an exaggeration.

Don't care as long as we win that's what I pay to see my club do and I like them to do it in a way that is true to them not copying someone else because their style is in vogue. Unfortunately many see what others are doing and want to have that. Part of the English class system I suppose, you always want what others have.

Not really because we've still been true to ourselves (up to two weeks ago) and given it a good go despite the financial limitations set by the owner.

You must be close to ending your Reading Player subscription though Ian.

Not really, I've paid it all this year without using it at all.

And I'm happy with the club thanks, just not our performance this season. But you can't have it all good. You just have to taken action when things go bad.

Maybe Fordham has provided the press copy :D especially as it says a £30 million transfer kitty but are only giving him a two-and-a-half year contract?....a lot of money to let loose with a manager on a relatively short term contract..
