URZZZZZ Oh and spizz, the stuff about the PL being the best in the world is all a myth

Depends on how you want to look at things. In terms of the quality of the very top teams? No it probably isn't. But in terms of competitiveness and drama it's very close.

For example, lets look at the number of points separating the top 4 in Europe's 'best' leagues.7

France - 4 points.
Spain - 7 points.
Italy - 7 points.
Germany - 7 points.
England - 2 points.

I KNOW England are below average that's my whole point about why it's silly to be critical or doom and gloom when we spank 27th in the world, and I'm not entirely convinced we should do better.

I think Englands problem is that we under rate the importance of certain footballing attributes and it means that teams who "on paper" should be poorer than us can in fact make us look very ordinary. In other words, our players aren't as good as our media, managers, coaches and fans think they are.

In terms of the quality of our national team we are reaping what we sowed for the last 30 years and are exactly where we deserve to be.

Credit where credit is due - that is some top quality goalpost shifting.

Depends how you define best.

It's probably one of the most entertaining because it's so helter skelter. Is that how you want to define best?

I meant in terms of the quality if football, not how competitive it is. If that was the case it would be the championship by far, never more than 10 points separating playoffs to just anove relegation

The problem I had is not that you were saying it England was shit, but that you were saying that and implying we should be winning comfortably anyway.

"oh we are so shit, they are so shit why aren't we winning"

Maybe it was because we are shit.

In the end we won.

"Yeh but it's only Montengro"

But I thought we were shit?

Fair enough. I can't get excited by the Spanish league. 2 or 3 top teams who dominate the rest, both financially and technically. It's not fun to watch. The Italian league is full of painfully negative and cynical play. The German league is decent, but again totally dominated by Bayern who hoover up all the money. Obviously I'm totally biased, but the PL holds my interest significantly more than any other league that Reading aren't involved in.

The PL isn't even close to perfect, but at least they try and distribute the revenue with some semblance of equality.

Agreed, but just because the prem may be my fav league in the world doesn't make it the best

There's a reason it's the most watched league.

My definition of best would be decisions not dominated by money, where youth development is prized, fans aren't treated like cattle... i guess that is the German leagues at the moment? Although Bayern are kind of the exception to the rule on one of those counts there

Well, yes, but as many have said it's all about how you define 'best'. Entertainment value? Relative quality of the top 4? Relative quality of the bottom 4? Relative quality of top 10? Relative quality of bottom ten? Number of goals? Number of fans? Global appeal? Performance in European competitions? Quality of national team? Competitiveness?

Would be interested to see some the results of sort of study combining all these factors using a variety of importance coefficients because I think the PL would score pretty highly tbh.

Indeed, and it's one of the many improvements that still need to be made in our grassroots structure, but I'd be very surprised to hear of the other nations pumping significantly larger amounts of money into non-league football.
