Good to see Milner getting a run out in his best position, and the two Southampton players getting a start.

Never keen on Rooney playing up top on his own though.

That's one way to keep the band quiet.

Some solid racism from Townsend on commentary regarding the Chileans being a bit naughty, his trip to the unemployment line is the only good thing about BT Sport's attempts to take over the world

Can't decide if Chile are actually any good, or whether they look good because England are shit.
It's probably a little bit of both.

Lallana looks very handy. We're so much better with Rooney playing off Sturridge though.

Lampard and Milner are both ok players but a central midfield players at this level? No thanks, poor Jack Wilshere is having to carry them both.

Not sure that Milner has a best position-a moderate player IMHO who runs about quite a bit and fairly slowly. He got caught in possession dithering for Chile to create that very good second chance.
So far Lallana has done o.k and Johnson has tackled strongly but with Milner and Lampard in midfield we have gone back to moving the ball too slowly.
I would expect Townsend to come on to add pace sooner rather than later.

jd82 So in summary - all international careers are meaningless unless you win something.

Its relative to expectations of both player and team.

But its notable to see the hint of expectation ramping on this thread for next summer.

People always say this, but try to find people actually predicting success for England, and you have to search pretty hard.

It doesn't stop many from going on about how the tabloids and the England fans think England are going to win though.

As for Milner, he's a bit like the groove in your upper lip. There certainly is a purpose to its existence, but I can never figure out what it is.

Chile are a useful well organised side, nothing too special but a side you'd want to avoid if possible if you're a side line England

England themselves are over rated crap who a lot of planks seem to think could win the works cup next year

Tonight's game is just pointless filler of no possible interest to anyone. Hodges on won't learn anything much from it other than how many so called reserves aren't really up to it.

Been watching a film. Thought I would check in and see how 'The Lampard Friendly' went?

lovely commentary on an outrageously late foul by Cahill - "Cahill's just getting a bit frustrated" what a thick fucking tit

Do you actually know anyone who thinks England are serious contenders?

Needs to be a mix of Carrick, Wilshere and Gerrard in Brazil. Not enough room in the squad for Lampard, especially when someone like Gareth Barry is on far better form, and younger players like Rodwell, Jones, Henderson and maybe even Cleverley (lol) available.

With everyone fit I'd go for a 4-3-3 of:

---------------------------------------Hart-------------------------------------

Johnson-------------Jagielka/Jones-----------Cahill--------------------Cole

---------------------------Carrick-----------------Wilshere-----------------

--------------------------------------Gerrard----------------------------------

Walcott-----------------------------Rooney--------------------------Sturridge

Nope. It's easy. There's spots and spatters of it on this thread.

Not so easy that you could actually pick out a single one as an example though?

The nearest is probably the opening post, suggesting we should easily beat Chile. Beating Chile does not make a team serious world cup contenders.

I just don't get the Carrick love-in that so many England fans have. To me he is a good player (like Cleverly or Barry) but he is not this World Class midfielder that everyone raves about. Always goes missing in the bigger games and cannot tackle for shit. Yes his passing is his best asset....but he is certainly not the holding midfielder everyone seems to claim he is. People compare him to Scholes, but that is an insult to the best English player of his generation. Xavi, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane and so on all raved about Scholes......don't hear any of them saying they really want to play with Carrick. I'm not saying he isn't a decent player, but to me is representative of everything that is wrong with our general perception of where we stand as a national team compared to other nations. Carrick ain't gonna win you the World Cup.

I presume Carrick gets picked because he's less shit at more things than all the other candidates. wheras Gerrard is only good at running around and pointing, Lampard's only good at scoring a brace when you are already 3-0 up, Young's only good at falling over and Milner's only good at getting hold of compromising photos of the manager.

We didn't learn anything new yesterday.

Lampard shouldn't be on the plane to Brazil, and Ashley Cole is better than Leighton Baines.

It's a shame we didn't score and had many chances, especially in the early stages. Chile were clever on the counter-attacks and of course they scored. After their first goal England had a bloody nose and couldn't seem to get back into the game. Chile kept up the pressure while England started to appear like they didn't have a plan. When any corners were taken England looked lost and disorganised. The Chile fans were also in fine voice and I must admit I didn't expect half as many to turn up.
