Come Wednesday night, they could very well have been in the semi final of the capital cup, with a favourable draw. That and a great ecord in Europe (ok, against pub teams, but still) should've been enough for him to keep his job IMO.

Although it's a results business I don't think it's strictly results that have got him the sack, it's the lack of progression and attacking threat that's the main problem on the pitch. I'd be amazed if there wasn't something going on it the background that was the real underlying reason.

Capello 6/4 for the job presumably because of his Baldini connection.

Cureton's Volley Harry Redknapp - Went back to Pompey after going to Southampton, so it's just a matter of Levy overcoming his ego to complete the comeback... unlikely but not a bad shout at 40/1.

Can only see this coming in as the rumors inevitably perpetuate through social media.

In to 20/1 already

Sacked for not building the team around Gylfi.

Good decision by Levy.

I think it's time for another "which glory boy team do you least dislike" thread.

I vote Spurs, largely for the regular ROFLs they provide.

Handsome Man Did he choose the players or was there a director of football involved? It seemed pretty obvious before they sold Bale that they were just frittering their money away on rubbish.

How'd you work that one out?

:?:

I wouldn't call many, if any, of their summer signings 'rubbish'.

In:
Erik Lamela (Roma, £30m)
Roberto Soldado (Valencia, £26m)
Paulinho (Corinthians, £17m)
Christian Eriksen (Ajaz, £11.5m)
Vlad Chiriches (Steaua Bucharest, £8.5m)
Nacer Chadli (FC Twente, £7m)
Étienne Capoue (Toulouse, £9m)
Out: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid, £86m)

They all looked like hopeful signings to me. There is lots of potential there, but none of them would have had opposition teams quaking from day one in the Premier League. It seemed like a collection of the type of player Chelsea would pay too much for and rarely play before letting them leave quietly after a season or two. That might have been a pessimistic view at the time, but it doesn't seem too far from the truth now. In the January 2015 transfer window, somebody like Harry Redknapp will probably nab a few of them in a vain effort to stay up, meanwhile Siggurdson, Defoe and Holtby will be back in the Spurs side.

The BBC is blaming Baldini for the transfers.

Have to disagree really. Soldado and Eriksen have been top performers in Europe for a few years now, and a lot of people were very excited about Paulinho before he came. Capoue was a weird one, Chiriches is a good defender, Chadli is a bit meh and Lamela is just hugely overpriced. So, about 50/50 really.

Of the signings, Soldado struggled to settle and his wife had a miscarriage last month. On form, he's probably amongst the top eight or nine strikers in the league (two at United, two at Liverpool, two at City... any others?), but he just hasn't settled. Not sure AVB can be blamed for that.

Eriksen has been excellent, but got injured.

Lamela is a very good player, but I think he was Baldini's signing (he came from Roma, AVB has barely used him) and Townsend has basically kept him out.

I've heard very good things about Chadli from a friend who has an excellent record with Belgians. Again, probably kept out by the excellent form of Townsend and Sigurdsson early in the season. Might not have been AVB's choice.

Paulinho is a good player, but I don't think he really excels at anything, he's just good at everything. Like a Brazilian James Harper or Jermaine Jenas. Good cover I guess, but probably overpriced.

Capoue I don't understand. He clearly can't play in defence, and he was fifth choice central midfielder. Seems like a classic case of a player forced on a manager.

I don't know much about Chirches.

Essentially, I think Spurs will be fine once Soldado gets settled and Vertonghen and Kaboul are fully fit. They probably shouldn't have let BAE and Caulker go, because that's left them short at the back and left them depending on mediocre players like Dawson and (out of position) Naughton.

Read before that Lamela had some personal problems since joining and basically struggled with the lifestyle here. His Mrs went back to Italy as she didn't like it here leaving him living on his own in a hotel without knowing how to speak the language.
