Simon Osborn

by eddiegrundy » 11 Jan 2014 22:18

A blast from the past - I came across Super Simon Osborn today. He was playing in a training match for the UK 3 Lions charity team against a team of Dutch amateurs at Ipswich (bizzare, I know!). They were playing at Ipswich due to Fabian Wilnis's connections there, and he organised the team of Dutchman, being Dutch himself. Simon has put on a bit of weight but can still play pretty well, lobbing the keeper from 40 yards for the opening goal. He's recently parted company with Margate where he was joint manager. There's more about the UK 3 Lions on this site, including a little bio on Simon et al.

A few years since he finished at Bromley

Saw him at a charity bash a few years ago, still very much a class act....but then again, so was Scott Howie in goal (he was 'kin brilliant...a man playing ten years too early).

Shame that we never had Os around a bit longer

What a player. Loved him. As you say Spizz, shame we didn't have him for long.

One of my favourite ever players and it ruined my summer holiday back in the day when I read that he was off to QPR.

I'm still convinced that had he not been out for so long in 94/95, we'd have won the league that season. He was superb!

That one season we had Super Simon Osborn was one of the very best. Three stand out memories for me as follows:

1. His volley v Wolves that almost snapped the post in half
2. His volley v Charlton at The Valley
3. His scooped dink over the keeper v Oldham.

Two more in the "Highly commended" category are his headed goal line clearance v Bolton at Elm Park and his headed goal v Wolves in the same game as 1. above.

Without a doubt one of the most cultured footballers ever to wear the hoops and when we sold him to QPR who did we get in return??? Michael oxf*rd Meaker!

Absolutely this. We really missed him when he get crocked against Grimsby that season. He was definitely not 100% fit when he came back against Sw*ndon, but it was no coincidence that we finished strongly when he returned. Without doubt one of the best ever to wear the hoops. I still cannot believe that McGhee only paid 90,000 for him.

Still get stick for saying "we should have kept Dillon" after a couple of early games back in 94/95. Totally endorse the earlier comments, can only add that Osborn carried others / made them look better than they were (Holsgrove, Tom Jones, etc.)
