Views on Brian McDermott?

If Irvine got the sack,. How would you rate Mr McDermott? could he keep us up and work with a DOF?

Brian is an excellent individual , but he was a bit naive as a Premier League Manager and wouldn't be many Baggies' fans 1st Choice as Manager, so would be under immense pressure to perform from Day 1, which would be tough.

There is a game of Managerial Chicken going on at the bottom of the Premier League; which club sacks their Manager first in order to get Tony "miracle worker' Pulis installed.

McDermott knows Terry Burton well from their Arsenal days so, I would imagine, he would have no problem working with him. Not sure he's a Premiership quality manager though.

McDermott works best when he's left to get on with it and, being chief scout for how ever long it was, he knows how to spot a player, He's also a very good manager of people. However, he proved himself to be naive tactically with us in the Premiership. Give him strong coaches to work with and he could possibly do a job in the Premiership. He get's the absolute best out of average players, not so good at managing big egos and big time charlies.

As for DoF, he worked extremely well with Nicky Hammond, but Hammond's role here is more to manage the business side of managing a football team, negotiating deals and contracts, etc, less about the coaching side. Depends really on what your DoF actually does.

Agree with this, his insistance of playing 4-4-2 every week got him the sack eventually. Did amazingly well though with what he had at his disposal in the championship

He kept saying when we were getting spanked every week in the Premier League that he was learning a lot, but he learnt nothing at that level. Terrible outdated tactics, and just look at the drivel he brought in in the January window. Likeable guy but no way suitable for the Premier League. (Leeds fans liked him also but will also tell you the same about the football they had to sit through)
