National Anthems

by Mr.Swainey » 11 Feb 2015 00:52

Not strictly football related, but was watching the Six Nations the other day and we had to put up with that 'God Save the Queen' tripe with England. Isn't it time we ditched that shite in favour of something much better?

Who has the best the national anthem?

Have to say it always hacks me off when England use the British national anthem which is then booed by fellow Brits Wales and Scotland while they have their own anthems (albeit an absolute dirge for the Jocks). We need an English song

Cricket uses Jerusalem, which is better than God Save the Queen by a factor of about a million.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Queen dies. I cannot imagine anybody wanting to sing God Save the King in any situation let alone before a sporting event. I guess it will be Jerusalem everywhere when England are playing and we can have a public vote for the Olympics,

I think it should be Land of Hope and Glory for England.

Land of My Fathers is the one that gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and eyes mist over.

Does the Olympic anthem they play when we win medals have to have words? If not, we could have the Chariots of Fire theme.

Jerusalem for England and Land of Hope and Glory for Britain.

Why we still have this terminally offensive dirge about a (foreign) family in this day and age, rather than something extolling the country itself, is quite beyond me.

It would be possible to just go wooooooo-oooohhhhh and jump up and down to GSTQ though, wouldn't it?

An anthem will only make as much of an impact as the people singing it put into it.

Look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AtOCMu6jr4 Stadium's pretty empty (As are many Chinese games) but they ALWAYS start with the anthem (League matches too) and it always get blasted out.

The French have the best anthem by far and I did like the old Russian one, which I believe is now making a comeback. God Save the Queen is a dirge. Time we ditched it.

'Gree(n)d.

I do like the Russian one. It sounds suitably battle-weary.

La Marseillaise is also a good 'un. I was thinking before the Rugby what a curious thing the Italian anthem is. It's rather flimsy, doesn't have very much gravitas. If you were an appalling racist you might say that's a good fit for Italy, but you'd think they'd be able to deploy something a bit grander to cover up for their obvious national failings.

Beijing Guoan have a song that the fans sing to the tune of La Marseillaise... And it always turns into a complete dogs-breakfast.
