Sutekh Not this argument again. It's all a load of meaningless cobblers as how do you say Reading are bigger than Brighton or Scunthorpe are not quite the size of Colchester

Liverpool and ManU are the only true big clubs in this country, clubs with immense histories, fan base, international recognition etc.

That's not to say other clubs won't catch up with them eventually but there's a long way to go yet for most of them.

Liverpool - granted, their trophy haul is impressive but they definitely fall short in some categories these days, such is the demise of success at the Club.

Fan base - certainly nowhere near the biggest these days. Look on Twitter - LFC followers fall way short on Chelsea and Arsenal.
International recognition - Well, sides like Borussia Mönchengladbach we big back in the 70s but many people would say "Who?" today. Look on Twitter - LFC followers fall way short on Chelsea and Arsenal.

Should have been based on the last 10 years only. You don't gain 'big club' points for something that happened in 1899. Best not to give it pageviews.

Social media is indicative and a good sign of a clubs global fan base these days. You just need to get with the times.

Or you don't ignore the 25 largely good years (1894-1920) Reading had in the Southern League which was the equivalent, at least, of the FL Div 2 standard in those days but not, obviously, in the Daily Mail view. If those had been counted Reading would be about half a dozen places higher which is about right IMHO.

There are better ways to do that than twitter followers kesward which as i'm sure you're well aware these clubs can and do easily manipulate.

I may watch the matches on a hacked tv signal from Star India and buy my football shirt from some bloke selling hookey gear on a street corner but I follow them on Twitter and that's what really counts. By the way, Does anyone want a Man Utd top. They're so 2012.

Does that mean that the Chelsea fans on the Paris underground only racially abused someone to boost Chelsea's social media profile?

Actually I take it all back.

Reading FC = 148k Twitter followers
Ipswich Town = 48k Twitter followers

No way are Reading a bigger club than Ipswich.

Who cares about the whole debate ?
Totally pointless.

But have to say I'd definitely put arsenal alongside Man U and Liverpool in terms of global stature. Genuinely huge clubs with incredible histories.

It's also worth pointing out Reading have over 20k more followers than Leeds.

It's almost as if the Daily Mail wanted to trigger a heated debate amongst football fans.
Who'd have thought it.

Personal insults. It's not my fault the Daily Mail placed you in 43rd spot below Notts County.

I don't know about biggest, but we're currently 39th best and our 20 year average is 31st best. It certainly beats the arse off the previous 20 years (bar a minor trophy).

Didn't the club get exposed for buying fake followers a while back?
