England Women's U19 game - bizarre!!!

by Mr Angry » 09 Apr 2015 14:29

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32231318

England will restart a key Under-19 women's match in the 96th minute with a retaken penalty after a refereeing error.

Mo Marley's side, trailing 2-1, will replay the final minutes of the European U19 Championship qualifier against Norway in Belfast on Thursday.

German referee Marija Kurtes disallowed Leah Williamson's spot-kick for encroachment during Saturday's match.

But she wrongly gave Norway a free-kick instead of ordering a penalty retake.

The restart will take place at the Seaview Stadium in Belfast at 21:45 BST with a different referee, as Kurtes has been sent home following her error.

Uefa's ruling states that the match will be "extended according to the discretion of the referee". Approximately three minutes remain to be played.

The penalty retake could prove crucial as both sides vie for automatic qualification. If England and Norway win their remaining games - both taking place beforehand at 16:00 BST on Thursday - an equaliser from the spot could put England through as group winners on goal difference.

Uefa's decision to order the final seconds to be replayed was made on Wednesday following a Football Association protest. It is the first time such a decision has been taken in a Uefa competition.

Both teams must restart the game with the same players who were on the field at the moment the penalty was taken in the original match, although England can change the kick taker.

Have they made special allowances because it’s a tournament I wonder?

I would guess it’s because it wasn’t a judgement call, like an offside decision, but rather a clearly incorrect enforcement of the rules.

You also have to wonder if they’d do the same if it was a consolation goal, rather than one which will likely result in points.

I never understand the "encroaching" rule.....surely if you're scored the penalty then why should it mater if a player has stepped into the box before its kicked? Yeah if its saved and rebounded out but not this.....

In this instance its because it was an English player who encroached and in theory could have distracted the keeper hence a re-take. If it was a defender then 'advantage' is played if the penalty is scored.

Yet you can stand offside and distract a keeper all you want from a free kick, without "interfering with play". Never understood why its a special circumstance for pens

They are simply sticking to previous precident. Same thing happened in 2005 between Uzbekistan and Bahrain and they replayed the whole game. Probably don't have time in the schedule to do this here hence replaying from the point of the mistake.

I think it's great.

And rightly opens up the whole possibility of being able to change results retrospectively.

To err is to be human, to error as a referee is to get the whole football community talking....and get the sack

Amen brother. BBC can fack off with their crusade for wimmins football. It is a minority sport and should be treated as such. If they are going to give it airtime then they should give equal coverage to angling, ice hockey, speedway, sailing, crown bowling, ten pin bowling, tiddliewinks, squash, and facking badminton.

I remember 10 years ago or so when Real Madrid had to play the last few minutes of a game as the original was abandoned when the fire alarm went off and the stadium was evacuated

I wonder what they would have done if the penalty had been in the first minute of the game and England had ended the game 2-0 down?
Same error, and you could argue a totally different game had an early goal been scored.
Really dangerous decision, stand by for huge numbers of Chelsea managers demanding games be replayed due to thrown ins being awarded the wrong way....

Yes, as per the decision that happened in 2005. It's a very distinct set of circumstances so doesn't open any door at all.

CCTV5 have a women's ice hockey match on wednesday. I think I'll watch a bit of it for the giggles.

Women's football gets equal air-time to the men here (Mind you; the women are far more competitive).

Surely wrt pens the issue is not so much distracting the keeper as gaining an unfair advantage over the defending side if the pen is saved and rebounds into the box.

... in which case it would then be disallowed...

Apparently the Referee was awarded the 2014 Referee of the Year award from the German FA.

In similar scenes - an Inverness player has been banned from the Scottish Cup final retrospectively for handball, following controversy in the semi-final vs. Celtic, who were denied a clear penalty.

Retrospective punishments for violent play are one thing, but going back and correcting refereeing mistakes? Do I not like that.

The Scottish FA are probably shitting themselves that Celtic will up and leave to join the English league.

This is wrong though, if they do it for this then they have to do it for every decision a ref fails to make....
